GdS: Capacity, demolition, volume and relocation – the latest on the stadium project

By Oliver Fisher -

The public debate process has officially begun as AC Milan and Inter look for a final answer regarding the new stadium project.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes how Milan and Inter presented the feasibility plan of their proposal to the citizens of the city, but there are important clarifications regarding the demolition of San Siro, the capacity of the new stadium and the construction times.

The biggest question still concerns the fate that will be reserved for the current San Siro stadium because neither club have ever entertained the idea of restoring the facility. They believe is not possible because the teams would not know where to play in the meantime.

If, as scheduled, the new facility is ready for the 2027-2028 season, the demolition of San Siro will begin the following year and in its place from 2030 there will be a building with different functions.

Despite new renderings having emerged, it could still be that the Cathedral is the plan chosen but it is an issue related to the volumes. The project has a total cost of around €1.3bn.

Another important issue is that of the capacity of the facility, which will welcome two of the most followed teams in the world. The idea is to build a new stadium with 60-65,000 seats so it is constantly sold out.

The intention of the two clubs is to break ground in 2024 but if the public debate presents further problems and does not facilitate the process, there could be different solutions such as moving to a different area like Sesto.
