GdS: Cardinale meets the management – what was discussed after Fonseca’s poor start

AC Milan have not had the best of starts to the season under new head coach Paulo Fonseca, and a report claims that Gerry Cardinale met with the management yesterday at Milanello.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport report this morning, the results are worrying but the performances and the attitudes of certain players are even more so. Cardinale was at the training ground yesterday, and he reiterated his trust in the coach in a calm and constructive discussion.

Of course an immediate change of pace is needed to avoid things becoming too sour, because Cardinale cannot be satisfied, something that was transmitted to the coach in yesterday’s long discussion.

A fleeting visit

Cardinale was already in Italy and wanted to include a visit to Milanello among the appointments on his agenda. From there he then left for the United States.

He also gathered the rest of the management, while he did not meet the team who trained in the afternoon. The discussion involved the CEO Furlani (with whom Cardinale then left Milanello), the sports director Moncada and obviously Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Senior Advisor of the ownership.

The lunch involved a main course was the slow start of the team and all the limitations that have held it back so far. Fonseca publicly took full responsibility, explaining – and he also did it privately with Cardinale – the reasons that have in his opinion affected the pace of the start.

The different condition of the players in the group, the change in playing philosophy that requires time to be assimilated and the absences of many of the players that will form his starting XI were cited as key factors.

Theo on the bench against Torino, to Morata’s injury, plus Emerson and Fofana on the pitch for only a few minutes so far were mentioned, in addition to the lack of time together on the training field.

Trust re-iterated

Fonseca was chosen by Cardinale, who was well impressed by the Portuguese since the first talks, and two bad games won’t result in that being ripped up. However, a decisive change of pace is needed especially in the manner of the performances.

The Portuguese coach was not happy with much on Saturday in the defeat to Parma and – during lunch – the post-match statements were also discussed. The talks were constructive, but it is strange to think that after just two games it’s already necessary to sit down and talk.

The team’s next commitment will be against Lazio, Cardinale will follow on TV waiting for a first smile because what has been seen so far has only brought disappointment. Building a new Milan inevitably requires a settling-in phase, but the Rossoneri are already five points behind Juventus, for example.

  1. The thing is he has the tools to turn it around. How about we play liberali instead of instagram model loftus ass cheeks? Zeroli instead of low iq musah? if he plays those youngsters and he still loses he’ll have our support

    1. Those youngsters just lose 0-1 against a serie C team.

I believe in their potential but its not wise to put too much burden on them. Its too early. Let them grow steadily.

      1. How long are we going to keep saying the same thing? “Oh give them time it’s too early” We’ve been saying that for years. Our youth level is at a good level and now is the time to do something different for a change. Wouldn’t you agree they will show more grinta and hunger then these primadonnas on the team

        1. Some of them are 17 years old. They will get bullied in seria A. Pre season playing against other youngsters fro City and Barca is not the same like offical games.

        2. Completely agree! Very good point! My entire life, this is what Ive been hearing every year. ….give them time, it’s too early, they need to grow….blah blah blah. Throughout the years, all the ownerships care about is the Milan futuro. They keep signing young kids for the future. So by now i would think we have something ready to field. Give the young guys a chance and thank God they are italian! Zeroli, Camarda, Liberali….this management and ownership are pathetic low-lives

      2. There is no such thing as too early when it comes to make or break moments. Few players break due to being pushed too early, but many more are lost due to not getting a first-team chance. It’s better to be early than never

  2. I think the main issue is unbalanced squad. it was done more so to give Saelemakers room in the squad at first but some things didn’t work out.

    Reijnders (Pulisic, Liberalli)
Fofana (RLC, Musah) – Bennacer (new sub Regista)

Pulisic isn’t doing that great on the CAM role. And on paper Saelemakers would be a good Leao sub, but then the Okafor is the odd man out. Okafor’s ST performance wasn’t the most reassuring, but the entire team was a mess vs Parma. maybe Okafor can try CAM, he does give Jonathan David vibes and his false 9 qualities can translate well to CAM role.

    Reijnders (Okafor?, Liberalli)
Fofana (Kone?, Musah) – Bennacer (Ricci?, Zeroli)

If not then we should permanently promote Liberalli and take a gamble like Juve did with their sub fullbacks (and winning tbh, but they did play vs weakest teams) or we need another midfielder. RLC is also not a reliable player. And since Fonseca is still in the experimental phase this might really hurt us this season…

    1. Ricci and Kone would cost us 40-45M… RLC would be a 25-30M buy for a low tier EPL team…

Jovic is also horrendous and Gyokeres is now available since Sporting got Roque…

  3. Can you imagine that there was a sirious meeting where these so called proffesionals in their jobs, menagement ,were discussing about a new coach in which they chosed to go for fonseca rather than motta 😂😂🤔🤭🤡🤡🤡 everyone who take a place in that decision should be fired 🤣

    1. Motta had an agreement with Juve in April, since they knew Allegri was fired but we gave every second of the season to Pioli to prove everyone wrong…

      1. Motta was avaliable for Milan long before April, he even gave interviews about going to Milan next season, but the slow reaction and undisacivnes of our management allowed Juve to basically steal Motta.

    2. I wanted Motta too but Pioli’s 10 game winning streak confused management for some reason. Obviously his time was up so that was a huge faux pas.

  4. Oh Jerry himself chose Fonseca. With his huge knowledge of football. He was probably amazed by Fonseca explaining how his job at Lille was to develop young players to resell them for profit.

All the evidences were here. Last year the team never built momentum. It was a rollercoaster. Erratic recruitment, poor decision making from a management that is mostly including bankers and yes men, tight salary cap, cheap moves including the coach, focus on the brand and business. A few days ago some fans here thought that Milan is going in the right direction and now its crisis and panic.

Because Jerry is not interested in ROI and growth and making Redbird shareholders happy. He wants Milan back at the top of course, he’s such a huge fan of football that he found out Milan won 7 UCL when he arrived in Casa Milan for the first time. Also he loves unicorns. This guy should speak to Jerry Jones, Robert Kraft or John Mara rather than the Yankees’ owner.

    1. de Zerbi would have been a perfect fit…

For replacements Xavi is still available and so is Zidane… Allegri would make us Juve 2,0, so I hope it won’t be him

      1. Someone here (sorry I forgot who) posted a YouTube video of Fonseca explaining how he was asked at Lille to focus on developing young cheap players to raise their value. We know why Fonseca is here.

The main problem of this team is Jerry. One of the first football games that this guy watched was Milan getting destroyed by Chelsea in UCL group stage in 2022. Ever since he’s obsessed with “physicality” and EPL players. Milan clearly lacks Serie A players and Italian players who know what it means to wear these colors. He said himself that he watched Milan for one year to learn the game, then he sacked the previous management. How humble. One year and he knows better than 5-time UCL winner and football legend Maldini, also named 2022 Manager of the Year, and Massara, whose new team Rennes is having a good start this season. Jerry was involved in the construction of the new Yankee Stadium, he knows that building a stadium raises the value of the franchise. But somehow it’s inconceivable for some fans to think that a Wall Street banker is only interested in brand, growth and dead presidents.

  5. Dude talks about winning consistently then turns around and hires Fonseca a coach who previously didn’t win in Italy.
Man do we need a proper sporting director.
I like hands on owners (if they’re competent) or owners who put someone competent in charge. We unfortunately have neither. At least Eliot hired competent people (gazidis mostly imao)

  6. Pick wrong coach, buy players with no capabilities to play proper football; and sit down with them to figure out what is wrong with them. Gerry Cardinale you are the problem.. Just sit infront of mirror and ask yourself question instead of showing your dramas.
