GdS: A centre-back, right-back and midfielder – the targets Milan have in mind

By Isak Möller -

In addition to the No.9 role, AC Milan are also expected to reinforce a few other positions and work is underway to find the right candidates for these. According to a report, the Rossoneri already have a pretty good idea of which players to go for.

Paulo Fonseca is set to become the new manager of the team and as reported by Gazzetta dello Sport, he believes only a few targeted signings are needed to compete with Inter. The No.9 role is obviously the main one, as discussed in a separate article.

However, there are a few more positions that Milan are expected to reinforce this summer…

More muscles with Fofana

Milan conceded a whopping 49 goals this season, which is far from good enough, and one of the reasons for that was the lack of protection for the defence. Midfielders like Tijjani Reijnders and Ruben Loftus-Cheek, as most know, lack the defensive instinct needed for such a role.

Therefore, the Rossoneri are preparing the signing of a defensive midfielder and Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana has been identified as the main for the job. He previously responded to the interest: “Everyone knows Milan and their past success. It’s a huge club.”

He seems tempted, in other words, and his contract with Monaco will expire in 2025. This should lower the price tag significantly and the latest indication suggests that €20m could be enough. A very good price and one that reminds us of the signings of Christian Pulisic, Reijnders and so on…

Right side of the defence

In addition to beefing up the midfield, Milan obviously want to reinforce the defence and a centre-back is the priority. The former Fiorentina man Igor, now at Brighton, has ended up on the Rossoneri’s radar and could leave for around €20m.

A right-back is also expected to arrive and Tottenham’s Emerson Royal has been mentioned lately, with Milan’s interest confirmed. However, with Fonseca taking over the team, Tiago Santos could be the right player for the role and he would also be cheaper than the Brazilian.

We were the first to report about Milan’s interest in Santos, launching the news on our Substack, and the Rossoneri are still very much interested.
