GdS: Chelsea ready huge bid as Milan set ceiling in renewal talks with Leao

By Oliver Fisher -

Chelsea are not giving up on the idea of signing Rafael Leao which has forced AC Milan into action over a renewal, according to a report.

Today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreMilan.it) takes stock of the negotiations that are underway between Milan and Jorge Mendes for the renewal of Leao. According to the paper, the Rossoneri management have set a ceiling of €6.5m net per season for the Portuguese winger who wants €7m, a difference that can therefore be bridged.

The big obstacle is represented by the compensation that Leao will have to pay to Sporting CP due to his exit to Lille in 2018. The player’s entourage are asking for Milan to contribute together with the French club in the payment of the €19m due to Sporting.

It is a figure that Milan’s new owner Gerry Cardinale does not intend to pay towards as Milan are not legally involved in any way.

Chelsea meanwhile are determined to land Leao and they would be willing to offer close the release clause present in Leao’s current contract (€150m), with a bid of about €120m ready.

  1. If we can’t renew Leao for some reason then at least don’t let him go for free and two or three replacement for him all three or only two should be Cody Gakpo Kamaldeen Sulemana and Noni Madueke. But if it’s only two then It’s Moussa Diaby and Cody Gakpo

  2. If we can’t renew then 120 is great and we shouldn’t get Mudryk as replacement plus a striker or RW or both depending on remaining budget.

  3. It seems Leao is also on his way out. I think having a strong focus on the costs is good on the long term as it makes the club operate w/o creating debts. Unfortunatelly this will force the club to make painful decisions, like selling Leao. Money decides at the end. There very few sportsmen chosing the club instead of the money. The reason why Leao should stay is here he can calmly grow while constantly playing in (and to win) the league and in the CL.

  4. Indeed if no contract signed… Sell would be best idea for 120milion and more
    There would be talents available
    Mudryk and gakpo, preferably mudryk
And money left for striker 🤔🤔…

  5. If not renew contract… Sell best option as i hate to say it 🤔
120milion, there are talented wingers out there as mentioned gakpo and mudryk and few more..remaining budget for forward, okafor or Broja

  6. I dont believe chelsea will pay 120m for player next summer only have 1 years contract unless AC Milan want to sell leao in january ( causing huge lost on scudetto race) . Better try renew him first . I will just suggest renew leao but sell rebic due to injury prone and find healthy LW for leao competitor

    1. LOL. Lack of class because he doesn’t want to pay someone else’s debts? If Leao owes 19m or half of that or whatever, then he should ask for a salary that will cover it. 8.5m debt/5 year contract length = 1.7m. 1.7m + 7m salary ask = 8.7m. He should ask for 8.7m per year (or 9m if you want a nice round number). Then let Milan or any other club decide if it wants to pay him that salary. Lack of class is asking someone to pay your debts. You should know how much you need to make to cover your liabilities. When you get a job offer do you ask your employer to pay off your speeding tickets? Ludicrous.

  7. I’d say sell now, except you can’t sell without the player’s consent, and he wants to go on a free. It is the best deal for the player which is why it’s becoming so common. Leao will never sign a new contract with Milan, not when the big-money teams will give him anything and everything he asks for.
As for Mudryk, he’s going to England, most likely Arsenal for at least 60M.

    1. Yep, thank you Mino Raiola for this fantastic practice. It is smart but very very annoying. I feel every player who does this destroys their own legacy at the club and just goes to show how selfish the world of football has become.

  8. I do agree with your point…. If sell in January be best for more transfer fee 120milion… But looking for his replacement now would be head start, it could damage our scudetto race but i hope not much.. Pending on our replacement for him and a new striker 🤔

  9. It’s stupid to sell Leao now. ACM should just give him 7M and renew contract for another 5 years. Then they can sell him for same or much likely bigger amout of money. If they sell him now or even worse if he leaves for free next year then ACM will spend another 30-40 millions to buy an unproven-but-talented-player like De Ketelaere which will need a year or two to develop and which will never reach the class like Leao is now. If we want to win something big (UCL) then we need to keep Maignan/Theo/Kalulu/Tonali/Bennacer/Giroud/LEAO and add more talented players

    1. Exaclty. You sign him to 7M season and if needed – sell him down the road (from a position of strength) for 120M if not more. 7M to foreign clubs (or even a club like Juve) is nothing. Remember Rabiot makes 7M lol. Sign and then IF we have to you sell later. The $$ for Leao will always be there because he’s an enormous talent. Don’t panic sell UNLESS he refuses to sign for 7M or says he wants to leave. Put 7M on the table right now. Give him what he’s asking for and IF he doesn’t sign then – That is another story and we would have to sell by summer at latest to avoid another Donarumma/Kessie/Hakan debacle. He’s asking to be one of the highest paid players in Italy not England – which is reasonable. Sign an extension and then if we need to you sell down the road.

  10. If he refuses to renew, selling him this January is the best option but getting replacement in January is an issue, my own opinion, I think Alan saint-maximin is a good replacement and noa lang as his deputy, with the remaining money, we can get a RW and a striker
