GdS: The bench shines but Samu struggles – Chukwueze remains a mystery for Milan

By Oliver Fisher -

While Noah Okafor got the winning goal against Lazio on Friday night to secure a big victory for his team, Samuel Chukwueze remained on the bench watching on.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) talks about Milan and the performances off the bench. Okafor and Luka Jovic have done very well this season, providing goals, but Chukwueze is struggling.

The Rossoneri have scored 13 of their 51 goals in the league this season through substitutes, a number that no team in the ‘top five’ European leagues can match, but Chukwueze is the exception.

Stefano Pioli didn’t use him at all against Lazio and Chukwueze, who returned from the Africa Cup of Nations, has not shown very promising sides recently. Against Monza he was replaced in the 45th minute, in Rennes he only played the last half hour and against Atalanta he didn’t play.

The goals against Borussia Dortmund and Newcastle remain significant, but the Nigeria international has not got anywhere close to the form that he had with Villarreal.

There is still time to make up for it, but Chukwueze will have to take advantage of all the opportunities he will have at Milan to show that he was worth the €20m plus €8m (bonuses) investment.

  1. We’ll likely give him a 2nd season to prove himself. If not, given his age and that he’s under contract for a while, we could easily loan him to Ligue 1 or La Liga.

Potentially could we sell him in summer 2025 without a loss (after amortisation)? If so not a bad signing, we took a risk and it didn’t quite work out.

But personally I think while he’s not the “Leao of RW” he still shows the odd moment which makes me believe he’ll come good. Like the goal against Newcastle

    1. I agree with what you propose.
As for him, I’d say that some players take more time to settle than others, Pulisic and Giroud settled very quickly while Tonali and Leao took at least a season to show what they can do. Even among other teams, Haaland was a monster from his first season with City, while Vini.Jr was pretty bad for 2 or 3 seasons.
In his case, we have to remember that he also missed the preseason.
With that said, I think his problem is that he tries to overcomplicate stuff. He seems to want to beat the man in front of him, doesn’t know how to do it and ends up cornering himself and either losing the ball or passing backwards.
He should take a page from Pulisic’s book, who plays in a way simpler fashion.

  2. So far, he has proved almost nothing that he was worth buying! Of course he needs to be given enough time to prove himself (the C.D.K. case) but he’s going to have to hurry because we need results !

  3. The difference between his first season and Leao’s and CDK is for both of them they showed a basic understanding of football, Chukwueze is a one trick pony, even in the Nations cup he did not perform, he was a mistake, the best thing is to move him on, preferably to the EPL, if he cannot be sold loan him to an EPL club..

    1. Okafor himself has said his best position is LW. He is right footed.

Chuk himself has said his best position is RW. He is left footed.

Why in the world would you swap them? Do you not understand the concept of inverted wingers?

Even with the poor tactics Pioli uses, even HE wouldn’t do that.

  4. Y’all have no patience. Give the kid a chance to acclimate with a full preseason, and remember he has also spent some time out through injury and away at AFCON that further decreased the amount of time he’s so far had to work with the team. Fking Negative Nancies.
