GdS: Data shows Leao’s struggles in 2023 compared to first part of season

By Oliver Fisher -

Rafael Leao’s 2023 has been a struggle so far and the numbers show that he has not been as effective as in the first part of the season.

La Gazzetta dello Sport provide the numbers, showing that Leao played 14 league games in the first part of the season and has played six since the turn of the year. The immediate comparison is through goals and assists: before the break he scored 6 goals with 3 assists, and in 2023 he has 2 goals and 1 assist.

Before the World Cup, Leao boasted an average of 3.6 shots per game and but since January came around his average has more than halved to 1.3. The number of key passes also dropped (1.6 against the current 1.2), while his dribbling effectiveness increased slightly to 1.8 dribbles completed per game from 1.7.

The report adds that the heat map (which is not provided) also shows that before leaving for Qatar Leao managed to be devastating up and down the entire wing, often starting from his own half of the pitch, but in the new year his presence is concentrated just beyond midfield with less incisiveness in the goal area.

    1. You sound American, right? 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Try some other sports, you don’t get this.

  1. We need to learn and renew their contracts before they hit peak. Like for example leao should have been renewed before his 3rd season began. (Last season)
But the management must have had their doubts about him. The guy earns like 1.5mil. Milan could have given him a small raise after two years and extended his contract just as a sign of we believe in you. But No!

  2. He has to pay a fine to Sporting, has to decide where his future is at and Milan was giving him low offers for over a year. I’m sure he should be extremely happy and playing his best football ever…😂
