GdS: Decision to award penalty against Romagnoli a clear and obvious officiating error

AC Milan can feel very hard done by to have found themselves 2-0 down in last night’s game with the penalty call on Alessio Romagnoli non-existent.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanLive) has taken a look back at the key incidents and begins with the one that caused the most discussion: the penalty kick given to Verona in the 21st minute.

Referee Alessandro Prontera gave the penalty after seeing contact in the area between Alessio Romagnoli and Nikola Kalinic. Even after communicating with the VAR room, the decision was confirmed, all while Romagnoli protested about the decision.

The paper reports that Kalinic, by spreading his right leg, stands on Romagnoli and goes down. It is the Croatian striker who provokes the contact that causes both players to fall so the foul was his, not Romagnoli’s.

As for the one granted to the Rossoneri in the second half for a foul by Davide Faraoni on Samuel Castillejo, La Gazzetta dello Sport claims that it was fair as the full-back touches the Spanish player’s leg and does not get near the ball.
