GdS: The final obstacle – what Milan must overcome to sign Emerson Royal

By Ben Dixon -

AC Milan have been interested in signing a new right-back for several months. However, it seemed that this option was off the table in recent weeks, but today, an avenue is re-opening.

Months ago, it was reported that Milan had an interest in creating some competition at right-back for Davide Calabria – who had a poor season by his standards – and a few names were in the mix, but gradually that list has shortened.

It quickly went from three names to one, and negotiations were proving difficult for the elected name – Emerson Royal. A report earlier this month suggested that the contact had stopped after the Rossoneri presented their first bid, but a report from this morning suggests that things are progressing well.

According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Radio Rossonera), there is one obstacle for the Diavolo to overcome, and that is the price tag. However, the distance is not as large as some may have imagined. Instead, there is a €5 million bridge to cross.

Milan’s bid to Tottenham – which caused the breakdown in talks – was around €10m, but the report from this morning suggests that it will only cost €15m to bring the right-back to the club. Given he has the conviction of the management and Fonseca, it could be a matter of time before a deal is revisited.

  1. So sick of seeing this donkey being linked to us, hasn’t had a good game in years, what the management see in this guy is beyond me, he’s not even cheap so it makes absolutely 0 sense. If we are going to spend near on 20m at least bloody go for someone half decent, or better still keep Calabria and Florenzi and use said 20m towards a player we actually need – a DM

  2. Worst management in the whole world, consistently going after terrible players like amrabat and Richard rios and Igor and lucumi. we just got really lucky with Pulisic and rlc and now this guy and they constantly try and get massive discounts on players who already are very cheaply priced for how good they are, then we miss out on them because we couldn’t make a good offer

    1. At least give credit to the management for the RLC and Pulisic transfers instead of saying it was down to “luck”. To be fair so far they have gotten massive discounts and good for them. Got Okafor for like 13m when RB were originally asking 35m. That’s just good business dude.

  3. I think people are too negative about this guy. Though not top class, in form and healthy he will be an upgrade on Calabria.

    1. no he wont. Calabria has proven again and agin, when in from and healthy he can play with the best of them. What has Royal proved in his 4 years in eu? Betis sold him the first chance they got and spurs bought a replacment for him after one season..

    2. Except that in the last 2 seasons he pretty much shown that he is a downgrade to Calabria.
So we will essentially spend 15-20M€ on a poor’s man Calabria in a position where we have something like 5 or 6 players. Meanwhile Pavlovic and our DM are begging for us to get them and we still can get the deals done.

  4. What do we call all this or is this how the management will bring back Milan to the top again?

So frustrating and annoying.. for several weeks now the management cannot conclude one signing, really tired of all this rumors

  5. Unfortunately it sounds like he is coming. I sincerely hope that a change of scenery will be good for him and he can be a more effective player than Calabria.

  6. Hopefully there will be more obstacles to block this transfer.

This guy has been a total failure since Tottenham signed him in 2021, so much so they had to pay 40 million to sign Pedro Porro in 2022.
He has awful cross accuracy and he is not good in defense either.

I wonder why Milan is opting to replace Calabria with a worse option, I understand the need for a more offensive wing back but this guy is definitely not an upgrade similar to most of the signings of these Cardinal 🤡🤡🤡
