GdS: Fofana’s Milan arrival could trigger double midfield departure – the details

By Ben Dixon -

Rumours about Ismael Bennacer’s future have been rife in recent months, and AC Milan could turn rumours into reality by signing a new midfielder, a report has suggested.

There can be no doubts about the quality that Bennacer possesses, but there can be doubts about his consistency. On several occasions this season, he has shown glimpses of his former self, but there has been nothing proven consistent enough.

Unfortunately for Milan and the Algerian star, though, his injury issues have become consistent, and now questions are arising regarding his position at the club. Of course, there is a talented footballer there, but his injury problems are gradually showing more, which is only hurting his chances of staying.

Especially when interest in the player is present, it puts the club in a difficult situation. More than anyone, the Rossoneri know about Bennacer’s talent, but how long can they gamble on the talent against the risk of injury?

Reports of a potential departure have been on the rise in recent months, and following a ‘four-hour summit‘ about his future, a departure seems a very real possibility, and the deal could be pushed if Milan were to sign a new player.

This morning’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) suggests that Bennacer’s place in the middle would be lost, and the Rossoneri may move him on, especially given the offers from Saudi Arabia could pay for Youssouf Fofana’s arrival. In addition to Bennacer, the club would also be willing to hear offers for Yacine Adli.

It would act as another revolution in the midfield. Goodbyes have occurred with Sandro Tonali and Franck Kessie in recent years, and Bennacer could join them with the view of bettering the squad once again. However, whether this will actually be the case remains to be seen.

  1. He came back from a knee reconstruction mid season and was inconsistent… hardly reason to think he won’t get back to his best after a full preseason.

Also, I don’t understand why fofana arriving would spell the end for him. Competition in the all positions is exactly what the best teams require.

  2. Once I believed Bennacer could really be a top defensive mid, but after injury it’s just not the same player. If good offer comes in, he should go.

  3. Bennacer is the most disrespected player in this team, every article about a potential midfield signing always has him as the player to exit and heavily focuses on his flaws when there are worse profiles in the midfield. Benny should be sold so we can have a new target to criticise.

    1. Exactly, bro. He came back and scored few important goals to secure the 2nd place. He just so injury prone. I believe with the right environment (fitness staff) his injury would be manageable and he could contribute more.
The problem were the role he was given has too much defensice responsibility, mainly because Milan’s other midfs don’t have any defensive capabilities.
