GdS: Fofana would revolutionise Milan’s midfield – what the data says

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are working hard to sign Youssouf Fofana this summer for the midfield and the data shows that he will make a major difference in the centre of the park.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the French midfielder would revolutionise the way that Milan are able to play under Paulo Fonseca as there are areas in which he excels when compared to the likes of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ismael Bennacer.

Last season at Monaco, Fofana was the player with the most dribbles, the most passes, the most chances created, the most tackles, and the most duels.

Whilst he may initially stand out for his physicality and large frame, there is a lot more to Fofana than that. He is very effective in attack whilst still being able to help the defence.

In all of Ligue 1 last season, Fofana was fourth for passes in the final third of the pitch, second for progressive passes and fourth for through balls, showing why Milan want him so badly.

His Monaco figure for passes that create an opportunity is 80.76 and none of the midfielders in the current Milan squad reach 68.

Loftus-Cheek is better than him when it comes to attacking the penalty area, whilst Yacine Adli is better at breaking up opposition attacks, but Fofana would become the best all-round midfielder in the team based on these metrics.

  1. What he’ll be able to do in Serie A is different to what data shows from his performances in Ligue 1.

But sure, considering the crop of midfielders we currently have, he’ll be an improvement nevertheless.

  2. He will not revolutionize anything because he will not come. Jerry Bozzo Clowndinale is just a cheap greedy american who runs a financial hedge fund and who is only a speculator.

  3. Well true tho he is an upgrade to our midfield. Bennecer should have been a good comparison just that injury he had set him back. We’ll have really not watch Fofana play tho. Does he have the attributes of kessie

  4. What BS. They pick some random stats from a random place and make up an article about it. Fofana was a b2b who played with a dm at monaco. We played pioli ball.

Compare him to pre injury benacer and we’ll see how he does

  5. – I have been a fan of Milan since 1989.
    – Firstly, there is so much constant complaining on this site or social media from “fans.” Be more supportive. I can understand your frustration, but look at the achievements of the current and past years with this squad; it’s not bad. And there is no honour anymore representing a club.
    – Milan management should reevaluate the basics of dealing with new and current players and agents. In recent years, it has been awful; I agree with the criticism regarding this matter. Hopefully, they will learn and do better.
    – It would help if you looked at the whole picture of who the owners are. It’s not like back in the day. Football has changed, and it’s all about money these days. Inter, Juve, etc, are better at closing deals, but how are they financially doing?
    – Enjoy the summer instead because it will be like this for a while. Please wait for the end of the mercato; then, we will know how well Milan has done. I think the articles on this site are more or less pointless regarding new players to attract traffic and readers. What’s the point of reading the news, expecting new players, and being disappointed because other clubs are closing the deals for our targets?
Spend time with your family and friends; I have stepped down and spent too much time in Milan. The current mgmt target is to sell Milan with profits.

    1. Did inter, Juventus, etc keep spending without selling big? Is this another calciopoli scandal? Their points should be penalised for this.

  6. He doesn’t want to renew. His contract expires next summer, and he already informed the club that he will be leaving this summer because it will potentially be the last chance to cash out on him.

  7. Too much dreaming in milan Management, spend less but want more, just play a game in sony PS 5, please…..
