GdS: Fonseca eager to get started as Milan prepare announcement – the situation

By Isak Möller -

Paulo Fonseca has been chosen as the next AC Milan manager, following the departure of Stefano Pioli, and the matter should be announced at the start of June. In the meantime, the Portuguese manager is already thinking about ‘his Milan’.

Pioli said goodbye to the fans during an emotional Saturday evening at San Siro, receiving the love of the Milan faithful during the post-game ceremony. He didn’t get the final result he wanted, drawing 3-3 against Salernitana, but at least they didn’t lose.

Today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (see photo below) has outlined the upcoming weeks for Milan, with Fonseca expected to be announced after the Roma friendly.

Fonseca awaits official statement

Fonseca is yet to be appointed by Milan, officially anyway, but he has still received a lot of criticism. Pioli went through the same experience when he joined in 2019 and now the Portuguese manager will have to stand tall in the adversity.

The 51-year-old is currently in Portugal, having finished the season with Lille last weekend, and he’s now just waiting on the official statement from Milan. Everything has been negotiated between the parties, so the Rossoneri just need to pull the official trigger.

The announcement is not expected to take place next week but rather at the beginning of June. The friendly against Roma in Australia is scheduled for midday Friday and once Milan have returned to Italy, there will be full focus on the future. A

A contract has been drafted for Fonseca. Two years with the option of a third or a pure three-year contract. Regardless of what it ends up being, the Portuguese manager is the chosen one.

Fans are annoyed

The reaction of the Milan fans has been far from optimal, as Fonseca has the reputation of a good manager with an attacking style, but not a winner. A majority of the fans were hoping for a big name to take over from Pioli, with a good foundation in place to make the big leap.

The club directors, however, have taken a different route and want to focus on a coach who can work with a young team. Fonseca has received a lot of criticism from the fans on his Instagram account, but just like what happened with Pioli he will have to ignore these.

Mercato pursuits begin

The official statement should arrive at the start of June, as stated, but Fonseca will only be able to arrive in July due to tax reasons. After taking a short vacation, therefore, he will work the first weeks remotely along with the management to decide on the mercato.

The manager must find a new No.9 along with the club, choose a full-back and perhaps a midfielder who can give his Milan a new dimension. In short, the work for the future will begin shortly and the Fonseca announcement is only a matter of time.

  1. Okay…so what are we supposed to do with this?
Inter have just beeb taken over by Oaktree yet they’ve closed the deals for Taremi and Zielinski and are still in the hunt for more signings. We’re here still waiting for July to come around. I’m so tired of Furlani and his way of handling issues of the club.

    1. Add osimhe to shinter list. ( spelled osimhe wrong most likely.) Always waking up late. Amateur managment.

  2. Come on,guys.. do you really believe that fonseca will give milan the second star ? I doubt that.. but when milan appointed pioli, i doubt that he’d won milan scudetto. And pioli won it or actually inter gave it.. the point is milan won scudetto with pioli as the coach..

  3. Fonseca = mediocre yes-man loser. Of all the names Milan got linked with, management picked the very worst one, a clear downgrade from Pioli. He couldn’t even place top 4 with Roma, twice, and finished 4th in France. Great, managers. Just great. Thanks for nothing.

        1. I don’t watch ligue 1 but i do know lille doesn’t have an automatic top 4 team.. they’re pretty shîty and they always sell their strongest players

      1. Mourinho is no longer relevant.
This is no longer the Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real coach who took them to the next level.

        1. What kind of an argument is that?

Don Carlo also wasn’t relevant anymore when he was coaching Mapoli and Evertonzl, then he went back to real and is winning trophies again..

This is why a vast majority of you people on here are clueless about football and have 0 knowledge what is or isn’t a good/great coach.. And i don’t even like mourinho. Not thrilled about fonseca either..

          1. Nope, Carlo is still relevant. He didn’t succeed at Napoli that happens and Everton was never a top team.
Mourinho is a great coach, don’t get me wrong, but so was Capello, Sacchi, Ferguson and I don’t think anyone would ask for them to be coaches nowadays.
Mourinho since 2019 (that’s 5 seasons) hasn’t achieved anything and was sacked from both Tottenham and Roma.

      2. Yes, I will try again: Mourinho is a has-been; washed since 2019. Don’t think of the Mourinho of the past. He is now outdated.

Look at Barcelona: a team in a disastrous financial situation, much worse than ours. Still, they picked a winner; we picked a loser.

  4. Fonseca appointment thats the gesture from the management. If you look to win trophy, you have to get some great coach. Raised the standard that pioli already build up. But not with fonseca. Last time in serie A tenure, hes sacked by roma.

I bet you guys, fonseca only 1 year at milan. Hes not strong enough the pressure from Ultras. Haha…

  5. If De Zerbi don’t get hired it will be riot in Milan.
What does this management look for?
A manager that can develop young players then De Zerbi is much better than Fonseca.
A manager that have a clear playing style then De Zerbi is better.
Media says that the management don’t want someone that complain if they sell a starting player and even there De Zerbi is better were in Sassoulo and Brighton they sold their best Players.
A manager that can raise the value of players even there De Zerbi is better.
And as bonus De Zerbi grow up in Milan and is Italian. How can the management let De Zerbi slip through their fingers it is a scandal.
It seems that our management have bought a Italian club but don’t like Italians.
We never buy good Italian Players and now when we need a new coach they dont want a good Italian coach like De Zerbi, Conte, Sarri, Motta, Gasperini, Motta.
This management don’t know anything about Milan and its tradition and they dont know anything about Italian football and they dont know how to win with a team like Milan.
They only thing they care about is profit and Milan is to big of a team to be run on profit. Milan is a team that must be run on winning titles.
Cardinale should buy a team like Atalanta, Brighton, Lille, Monaco, West Ham, Fiorentina or something like that were they can bring in talent and sell them to make a profit.
