GdS: The response, the French duo – four reasons for Milan to be positive after Leverkusen

The table says that AC Milan have zero points from two Champions League games, but unlike the opener against Liverpool there are some real positives to take from last night’s defeat to Bayer Leverkusen.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport write, Milan conceded 20 shots on target across the Liverpool (11) and Leverkusen (9) games which is a lot, while Emerson Royal on the right is a problem and Rafael Leao has practically never been dangerous, so there are problems to address. However, the game against the German champions also provided some encouragement.

Youssouf Fofana: After a month in which his condition was far from its peak, we are starting to see the France international at his best. Fofana is the only player with a defensive approach in Milan’s midfield and Fonseca needs him. It is no coincidence that he changed him early against Lecce, to have him ready here in Germany.

The 25-year-old will never be the box-to-box midfielder seen in his last season at Monaco, because Milan are asking him to be a defensive midfielder. Last night he showed he can do exactly that while also having the technical ability to launch attacks.

Alvaro Morata: It is no coincidence that the Rossoneri accelerated when Morata came on. With the Spaniard on the field Milan attacked more, were more dangerous and almost scored through him as well.

Beyond the header he sent wide from close range, we must look at the energy he transmitted to the team. The 31-year-old is not 100% due to bursitis, that’s clear, but he reads situations, knows what spaces to occupy, presses and makes the right choices. He remains the best striker available to Fonseca.

The response: Milan in the first 50 minutes were worrying as they were on the ropes for a long time, but the last 40 minutes however show that Milan can play on par with a team that beat almost everyone they faced last season and are growing.

The evolution under Paulo Fonseca started badly but from the derby it sends clear messages: the players are together, his ideas are beginning to be transmitted and the base level of performances is rising.

Mike Maigian: As we have seen before, Maignan played the game of an elite goalkeeper. In the derby he did the same with the save on Marcus Thuram and in Leverkusen he collected saves on almost all the Bayer players: Frimpong, Wirtz, Grimaldo, Adli, Hincapié, Boniface.

There is a very easy conclusion to draw: if he is well, Maignan is the best goalkeeper in the league and one of the best in the world.

    1. Haha 😂 we are Milan and we still need a coach the players can respect 🫡 not this our current coach. We are just being lucky since the deby. If we continue we might not qualify for cl I’m telling you

      1. You are just projecting your own feelings in regard of Fonseca on the players and there is no reason to believe that we wont qualify for cl next year as of now.

    2. Agree. Take the positives from yesterday and use that to continue improving. We’re on the right path for sure.

Zero or one point after two matches isn’t a huge difference. We still would have needed to win the “weaker” teams in UCL.

      1. 👌 compared to the opening games it’s night and day – I don’t get what people are still freaking out about when this team’s only just started playing together + with a new coach.

    3. but we can’t be relaxed with the management. it is clear fonseca is not the problem here but the lowball offer the management keep making. if fofana have had a preseason with us. we would have figure it out early he will need a more Dm to help him transit well: plus the 18 on Royal still sucks cos the RB is a very weak link in the team.

what should be done about leao. i believe Fatherhood is taking a toll on him but still man needs to quit fashion & music for now.

      1. Well at least we got Fofana in the end and he’s looking good now. Royal is still a head scratcher I’ll give you that – and the weakest link in the team. Maybe Jiminez should start getting some minutes – especially against weaker opposition.

        1. Royal did “ok” . definitely weakest link but i’m not sure if Calabria is a whole lot better. gut feeling says right now i’d take calabria even though he adds little going forward. With a 2 Strikers we are a bit top heavy. Royal does offer more going forward, problem is defensively he has lapses and each time he misses his mark, it’s a goal or a big chance.

    4. Don’t be relaxed.
It’s true we’re getting softer touches next (with the exception of Real Madrid) and that on paper we will be stonger, but we’ll sill have to show up good. Some of those teams will come to try to win or get a draw, and if we start missing even 2 points, we’ll be heading out.
I remember last season many were relaxed after we drawed Roma in the EL, look at what happened.

      1. Obviously those matches shouldn’t be taken lightly but considering that we at the bare minimum would get a double fixture if we ends up in between was it 15 and 24rth of 36 teams we should at least go so far so no real point in panicking at this point either.

        1. I’m not panicking.
Obviously even with a better team and coach we might still had lost to both Liverpool and Bayer and on paper we should be able to get through.
But I really dislike this laid back attitude or relaxing attitude.
We just got 1 good win so far in this season, and we’re still have our work cut for us.
We might allow ourselves to relax if/when we make it out of the group stage.

          1. It was more in general that I said that there is no real point in panicking, not meant as a jibe at you just to clarify that 🙂
Agree we definitely still has a lot of work ahead of us but that is sort of expected with a new coach and yeah I wouldn’t relax just yet either.

  1. “he reads situations, knows what spaces to occupy, presses and makes the right choices.”

We desperately need others to learn from this.
