GdS: Gabbia expected to stay at Milan beyond this season

AC Milan are expected to keep Matteo Gabbia at the club beyond this season after his impressive return to the club during the winter transfer window.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Italian defender has turned into an important option for Stefano Pioli thanks to injuries to the likes of Pierre Kalulu, Fikayo Tomori and Malick Thiaw.

It seemed that Gabbia’s time at Milan had come to an end when he was loaned out to Villarreal last summer, but he was recalled in January because of the injuries and he has stepped up when the coach needed him.

He has started 13 games for Milan this season and has shown a level to his game that most did not think he had.

Gabbia is under contract at Milan until June 2026 and whilst there is no suggestion yet that he is going to be offered a new deal this summer, it seems he will be set for a quiet time.

There is no immediate plan to sell him or send him on another loan. At 24 years old, another loan move would serve little purpose other than to build his market value.

If permanent offers were to arrive then the situation could change, but Milan do not plan to lose Gabbia, despite being linked with new defenders.
