GdS: Growth of Milan’s rearguard at the start of the season evident to see

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan’s strength previously was their ability to consistently score at least twice every game, but now it seems to be their iron defence.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes, Milan have conceded just two goals in the first five games of the season, which is the joint-best defensive record in Serie A along with Napoli who are motoring along with 15 points from 15 available.

The growth of Milan’s rearguard at the start of the season has been evident to see, with leader Simon Kjaer now a fundamental element of the team on and off the pitch, Fikayo Tomori’s impact as impressive as it was unexpected and a resurgent Alessio Romagnoli who did not finish last year well but is now back at excellent levels.

The reliability of Mike Maignan has been another pleasant sign from the early season, as he also arrived in the summer with a bit of skepticism given replacing Gigio Donnarumma is not easy, but now the latter has been forgotten and everyone loves ‘Magic Mike’.
