GdS: Ibrahimovic did not push for Fonseca – the candidate he wanted

Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s influence at AC Milan is still the subject of mystery, and a report has suggested that he did not have much of a say in who will be the next head coach.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport has a section on Ibrahimovic headlined: ‘Zlatan observes in silence: mercato and coach, Bonera and Kirovski the only choices.

The sub-heading adds: ‘Ibra has been back at the club for six months but has yet to be heard from. He doesn’t participate much and the first criticisms arrive on social media’.

On the head coach issue, the paper claim that Julen Lopetegui was contacted by the directors when Zlatan had only just been appointed by Cardinale, which means he was not able to express his opinion either way on the Spaniard.

Even Paulo Fonseca is not someone that has Ibrahimovic’s stamp. The Swede appreciates the Portuguese for his style of play, his ability to develop young players and knowing how to work with the management, but it wasn’t him who proposed his candidacy.

Looking at the options that have been mentioned, it seems that only Mark van Bommel was the only one that had Zlatan’s endorsement. The Dutchman is his former team-mate from the early 2010s and the pair have a close friendship, but so far he has only had success with Antwerp as a coach.

  1. Yeah why not, bring all your friends Zlatan, the campagne and lobster is good, just ask Scaroni. Maybe Zlatan’s wife can replace Baresi as honorary vice-president. We already have his LA friend now, that Jerry certainly approved happily considering he can bring the business/entertainment oriented vision of the MLS. Conflicts of interest would never happen with Maldini and Massara.

  2. How is this any better than Flopseca? Conceicao just announced he is leaving Porto… probably going to Marseille how is this not a suitable coach for Milan? Spent 7 years at Porto won several of titles has UCL experience too… instead we went for that mediocre guy, just a question though Boban hired Giampaolo and we all know how it went and he was fired by Elliot for that mistake, in this case who is going to take the blame when Fonseca flops? I said when not if because I m 100% convinced that before Christmas he will be fired and they will bring back Pioli.

      1. Fonseca will succeed. Hopefully. He’s just here to align young players and end the season in Serie A top 4. That’s not so much to ask.

      2. Fonseca won’t succeed he could only help Milan stay were they are or get worse he won’t bring trophies .

    1. Wkwkwkk Boban hired giampaolo. How director sport can surpass technical director ?? Boban are working below maldini , he dont have authority to hiring coach . Boban contact zlatan in phone and convince him to join ACM. Without zlatan helping pioli in squad , that young squad will not win scudetto and consistently finish at CL spot . Boban get sacked by elliot because he is angry knowing elliot want to replace him and maldini with rangnick .

  3. So much negative chat with fonseca. Hes won nine trophies… Can see alot praise to fonseca in the future from the same fans.

    1. And can you blame them for being negative? Fonseca once fielded an INELIGIBLE player in Serie-A and had an extra substitution in a Coppa Italia match. Not exactly encouraging now is it?

But of course, if he’s appointed to be our coach, we’ll all going to be behind him – initially at least. He would need to succeed immediately or be another scapegoat.

    2. Currently there are too many chiefs at AC Milan and haven’t yet seen anything good happening that is improving next season team. A lot of talk and no action. At this rate AC Milan looks like they are going to be worse off. Wake up AC and get moving otherwise there is going to be no decent players available. Get going!!!!

  4. Top 4 ?
It’s more the 4th place actually.

Oh my god, 4th is the sweet spot! Qualify to champions league so all milanisti can dream of lifting the thropy again!
year by year by doing so, our goal will be alternated without us realizing.

Remember: “champions league is in milan DNA”, and if you forget, please remember “champions league is milan DNA”. They are brainwashing us right now and it’s happening.

You are the man jerry, you really are!
Cold blooded moneymaker and dream crusher

    Forza DNA!!!

  5. So mushhhhhh speculation. No one knows what Ibra want or didn’t want, especially given how cryptic his posts usually are. I find it hard to believe that anything gets outside of Ibra, Furlani and moncada.

I think most of the stories leaked to the press are done so by agents. So essentially media and agents work together…

  6. Ready to bet €500,000 that Zlatan will resign from his position with Associazione Clowns Milan before the end of this year.

  7. Unfortunately (and I hate to say this) seems more and more likely Zlatan is just Gerry’s puppet – brought on to ease the pressure from the fans for sacking Maldini. Redbird are excellent at spinning PR. Seems he has no power and is just there to shake hands, smile and take photos with the fans. Sad
