GdS: Super-advisor, frontman, decision maker – Ibrahimovic’s role at Milan

By Ben Dixon -

Since Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s return, questions have swirled about what he does daily, and in the mercato, we are seeing a more in-depth view of what the Swede does at AC Milan.

When Ibra’s return was announced, it was done so with the news of a ‘double role’ across RedBird and Milan, which shone some light onto the situation, but there was no tangible title to suggest what exactly he would do.

As time has progressed, we have seen glimpses, and following this mercato, we should have a full understanding of what the role entails.

Nevertheless, Gazzetta dello Sport have attempted to summarise his position, looking into the different aspects of what he does.

The report starts, stating that Gerry Cardinale and the Rossoneri have chosen him as a ‘frontman’ when ‘agenda is important’. It is known that there have been issues from the fanbase about the club’s management, but having a legendary face is helping to heal that image, so to speak.

Of course, he is still studying for his role, and learning daily, but his intervention increases daily. An influential part of the Morata deal, as he looked to secure a deal, and add a personal feel to the club.

It is a case of trust and guarantees, which Ibrahimovic looks to provide as the frontman to the ownership, which is also helping in the renewals for Theo Hernandez and Mike Maignan.

Every movement from the club passes his desk, even if it is only for him to gain an understanding of it, and the same happens at Milanello, where he is everpresent, for the manager and the locker room. For Ibrahimovic, the idea of being one is vital, and he looks to be central to that, keeping the team together, and adding players to it that fit the squad.

  1. It’s beginning to look like Ibra does actually know what he’s doing, which was probably why he was picked by Cardinale in the first place. Let’s see where we are this time next week…

    1. How do you know if he looks like he knows what he’s doing when most ppl and news outlets are still guessing as to what he’s supposed to be doing ?? 🤣🤣🤣🤣

      1. They say it was Zlatan’s idea to “close the curtains” on training sessions. They say Z convinced Morata. etc.

Many things seem to be going to the right direction now. One can’t say the same about things 6-12 months ago. Why’s that? I dunno for 100% fact but I do know that Zlatan is now there and before he wasn’t.

But sure, everyone can pick out their own “facts” that suit their narratives. Some people will blame Cardinale for a certain shooting that happened over the weekend. Others will blame him for missing the shot. All we can do here is speculate.

And I see someone removed my previous post for some reason. 😀

        1. Thanks because they deleted mine too along the way. You have me catching strays here on your write up. I believe what you wrote was what is called an appeal to ridicule which many posters do here on Sempre. Thank goodness I had copied my comment Phew.
Anyway, my basic question is what does Ibra do? Like, what’s his role? And what’s his purpose? That’s a genuine question and not even a knock on Ibra.
You also seem to have picked out your own facts to suit your own narrative. Didn’t Ibra want MvB or Conte?..and here we are with Fonseca. So how is he a front man or advisor or Gerry’s voice of he himself has no real power.

  2. The work of Zlatan, Moncada, Furlani can be objectively judged based on the results after at least 2,3 years. Until then everything is reactionary based on a game or a transfer move.

  3. ……so…..we still don’t know what his role is if after close to a year news outlets are still guessing. Seems like he’s just basically Maldini but without veto or voting power. I’d genuinely like to know what his role actually is. “Frontman”??? Things pass his desk but he has no say?? Huh? 🤷‍♂️

    1. We know he’s a mascot and a parrot that tells some fairy tales to fans and media. He won’t give any interview saying that the club needs to invest to be competitive, he’ll continue with the bs like “we’re thinking about the third star”, “thanks Redsh!t”, “we’re ambitious” bla bla… Meanwhile 7-time UCL winning and 2022 Scudetto winning A.C. Milan recruits Fonseca and Morata with more average dudes incoming after a terrible season of getting humiliated by Inter and embarrassed in Europe while other top clubs are all strengthening their own squad.

  4. Role for ibra is to protect Gery from true Milan fans. So that Gery could make milan the piece for his item so that he could sel it for max profit. We do not need glory or trophies. We are here to cheer our beloved owner ‘Gery Cardinale’ so that he will make Milan irrelevant for decades. And you never know one American will bring more americans to built their projects for their profits . If you guys are too blind to see whats happening then 4th place is what you all deserve. Buying washed player for lower cost, selling top players to generate cash will always make Milan books profitable. But it has no benefit if they don’t serve the true purpose. Football is played to win matches and trophies. Not for scammer to make a club his business tool. Ibra one liner will soon come on the fans that are desparate to see this club at the top. Ibra is here for his own agenda also. If we fans do not react to the mess then we need to accept 4 place is Milan’s identity. Milan is the new Arsenal.

  5. I still think we need an experienced sporting director. Somebody that can buy into the RedBird vision and actually formulate a viable short-term strategy.

I think RedBird vision is geared more towards long term success and sustainability. But they are stumbling a bit short term here.

    1. Finally some common ground. We need a real sporting director like Marotta, Sartori or even D’Amico. I thought that Redbird for all the boasting about expertise in Sports would have actually made major changes to the sporting side of management when they fired Maldini and Massara and went with their own people/resources. (Not that M&M were bad or anything, they still got us a Scudetto and a nice showing in the UCL). But they kept basically everything in place but those two 🤷‍♂️.
