GdS: Jovic and Giroud together – Pioli prepares surprise move for Udinese

By Oliver Fisher -

Signs arrived from today’s training session at Milanello that AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli is ready to try something different against Udinese by going with two up front.

According to a report from La Gazzetta dello Sport, Pioli is aware that by fielding his usual 4-3-3 system he would have a hole on the right side but for Luka Romero, who the head coach himself admitted he ‘expected more’ from in the Napoli game.

Instead, the plan is for Luka Jovic to partner Olivier Giroud in a two-striker system, because Pioli wants the opponent’s 18-yard box to be filled much more, especially given that he expects them to play ‘deep’.

The four players certain to start are Yunus Musah, Rade Krunic, Tijjani Reijnders and Rafael Leao which seems to suggest the switch to a 4-4-2, therefore with Musah on the right, Krunic and Reijnders in the centre and Leao wide on the left.

There is also the possibility of seeing Leao – who has not scored in close to two months – more central on the pitch in something like 4-3-1-2, perhaps with Jovic and Giroud alternating to drop back a few metres.

    1. Let’s see what Pioli is cooking with this lineup. This is something new for sure, we can see that pressure is taking the better of him. I hope the results are positive for this one.

    2. Seeing Romero played like that in a post that there’s no other option for now (RW), it’s normal for a coach to seek another alternative in the system. Altho I’d prefer to see Okafor up front as I think he’ll do better as a second striker.

      1. Yes definately. But it will be interesting with two big guys up top against a big Udinese defence. Udinese hasn’t been good this season so I hope for a comfortable win.

      2. Musah can do rw. So can florenzi. There are plenty options that wont confuse the players like this can.
You know having 2 st instead of 1 also means there will be more room for udine to punch a counter through the midfield and the (i assume) high standing cbs
        We’ll see

    3. “We finally score from open play and he goes and changes things after that?”

Pulisic is out. How could he field the same players?

      1. nobody said he needs to field the same players… Im talking about the formation.
I mean honestly wtf will playing Giroud and Jovic at the same time bring? There is still nobody to feed them the ballzz and leaos work rate is cr@p so the left side will have a giant hole on def

        1. Well… Pioli has to try SOMETHING. Romero as a RW was a huge catastrophe so the 4-3-3 wasn’t/isn’t an option. Therefor the change in formation. I doubt he would field Florenzi as the RW (which would be the only viable option if keeping 4-3-3).

    4. The scoring from open play all originated from the right wing with Pulisic playing almost like a right sided attacking midfielder more than as a true right wing forward. Calabria provided the extra width.
So, no Pulisic, no right sided attacking midfielder.

  1. Have no fear Olivier Giroud will be there ..
We will the game against udinese…
We can win the scuddeto this season .
I have complete faith in the ability of our team ,and in our coach pioli ..
You will all be praising pioli after tomorrows game .
Why because we are AC Milan ,and my predictions are often correct..

  2. I think they should just go all out and beat Udinese and get the three points. As far as I’m concerned, the UCL is now a pipe dream.

  3. So,Pioli continue to push dead wood Krunić(back pass and 0% technik King ) further, leaving out Adli (in great form)or RLC…It wont help to have 2 strikers in front when they get no balls from middfield. The guy is handbreak in team, plays from useless to totaly useless.Disaster….0:0 till 80 minute, then we’ll start to run panicaly from line to line, few exchanges, wild running again…then it will come comment”We were better….we deserved more…we got no luck…”….we are witnessing going on Teater!Instead of pushing forward from first second, and play football Pioli is pushing “cautious”way of football which have cost as huge amount of points already in this, and seasons before.Shame…pitty…this squad surely have potential for scudetto this season. With this attitude, and clown Krunić in middfield the whole game looks like pure strugling with and without ball

    1. Yep. Backpass-Krunic in the starting eleven and then after 70-minute-mark Pioli panics and takes Krunic finally off and brings in some creativity. Let’s just hope it isn’t too late at that point.
