GdS: ‘Jovic did a Jovic’ – huge miss against Spain rounds off a ‘dark week’

By Oliver Fisher -

Luka Jovic could have been the hero for Serbia against Spain last night and could have climbed out of a difficult moment in the process, and yet he is under fire from the media again this morning.

La Gazzetta dello Sport begin a piece by citing what Marca said in their piece on the game last night: ‘Jovic did a Jovic’. They haven’t forgotten the tough years he had at Real Madrid and they took the chance remind him of it.

What happened? Jovic missed a huge chance, with an open goal, in front of David Raya, during the 0-0 draw last night. The striker had time to take aim and widen his left foot and yet he put it beyond the far post.

The match ended goalless and the image of Luka with his head in his hands went around Europe. Serbia would have beaten the European champions, not a bad way to start the UEFA Nations League group.

It has been a ‘dark week’ for Jovic, starting with exclusion from Milan’s Champions League squad list. It is not difficult to imagine that the two events are linked by a thin psychological thread, after a positive start to the summer with a renewal and getting the No.9 shirt.

Despite that show of confidence, Milan thought for a long time about selling him and by signing Tammy Abraham it opened up further doubts about his future. For Jovic there are probably regrets: had he known of Abraham’s arrival earlier, he would have done more to find a new club.

Giorgio Furlani said at Abraham’s presentation that Milan will also need Jovic: “There are many games, so it makes sense for us to have three strikers.” It is true, but Luka has a particular character, whereby motivation for him counts more than for others.

Last season shows: Jovic was regularly Giroud’s deputy, he played little as a starter – eight games in Serie A, one in the Europa League – but he came on regularly and responded. He amassed six goals in the league, two in the Coppa Italia and one in the Europa. It seems difficult to repeat that at present.

  1. Fonseca praised Kalulu > he’s gone
Fonseca praised Alexis > he’s shipped out
Fonseca praised Jovic > he’s on the transfer list
Fonseca praised Chuk > he played even worse than last season
Fonseca praised Liberali > he never touched first team’s grass

      1. As I said several times here already, the thing he said quite contrary with what he’s shown. And it’s crystal clear that there’s no synergy with him and the management.

        Copy – paste:

“But in reality many of his words don’t match with his action. He said players didn’t have age, yet in the season’s beginning he said our young players should be monitored and protected carefully. He said he needs a balance in the full back department, yet he signed Emerson. He said he will have a different approach in defense. In reality, well, this one is correct tho. We did defense differently, in a worse way.”

+ now he said he needed someone like Alexis in his team, integrating him well thru pre-season, just to see him gone on the season’s opening.“

    1. Because he’s a hard worker who has never complained at had a desire to stay and fight for the badge. Something you fools don’t value anymore. Simmer down

  2. It’s disgusting how GdS and all media treat Jovic. Even management form ACM. Everybody fail to score a great chance, even Messi, Ronaldo or Ibrahimovic sometimes and when they do miss they are not nearly criticized as Jovic who doesn’t play regularly for years and almost always comes from the bench. Guys, it’s normal to miss sometimes but it’s not normal to heavily criticize a player that didn’t even get a real chance to play. Shouldn’t you support the player and make evrything to make him feel confident so that next time he scores? This is just ridiculous. Actually, it’s very ugly do do that to anyone. We live in very cruel world and no one really cares about it. But think about it… It is very easy to be confident when everything goes well for you… but when things doesn’t go well can you really have a confidence? That’s when you need support and this player has no support at all. He was heavily blamed after the first game he played this season but he never got a single useful ball from wingers or midfilders and therefore had no chance to do anything. Yet, all the media accused Jovic for not scoring??? That’s insane!!!

  3. The treatment of Jovic is disgusting. The guy can barely get minutes, and still never complains and had 9 goals off the bench last season for a team struggling to score at all, he also came up clutch in the limited minutes he had in the euros too. Imaging if he was actually given a run of games to get into the groove, you might actually see the player who put 20+ away in Germany. But instead yall pile on him for nothing
