GdS: Jovic returns to training – he has three games to earn a new deal

By Oliver Fisher -

Some good news arrived from the first training session of the week at Milanello yesterday as Luka Jovic returned to training with the rest of the squad.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes this morning, the timing could well be perfect for Jovic. Now that Milan’s decision on his future is approaching, he is back fit and hopes to return to scoring goals.

He has not been on the pitch since 18 April, the second leg of the Europa League quarter-final defeat against Roma. Jovic came on at the Olimpico when they had 1- men but was unable to perform any miracles.

However, the Serb did score four days earlier, in the 3-3 draw away to Sassuolo, when he played as a starter. After remaining on the bench in the derby, the injury came on the eve of Juventus-Milan due to muscle fatigue, a problem that also kept him out against Genoa.

Yesterday, when work resumed at Milanello, the good news came that Jovic is back training with the rest of the squad and will be available for the match against Cagliari at San Siro on Saturday night at 20:45 CEST.

He will be able to compete for the place at the centre of the attack with Oliver Giroud, and he hopes for minutes to show that he deserves to stay, compared to the Frenchman who is known to be departing the club.

The direction of the club is already a boost for him because the feeling is that Jovic will be retained as a deputy to the new striker that they choose to invest in, with Benjamin Sesko the main target in this regard.

There are two paths: Milan could decide to renew the Serbian’s contract for another season, or extend it with a multi-year agreement. What matters is goals, and Jovic is one away from double figures. He has three games to get it and earn his stay.
