GdS: Kalulu’s miserable season continues – summer sale a concrete possibility

By Oliver Fisher -

Pierre Kalulu will face another extended period on the sidelines after suffering an injury during the win over Hellas Verona, and the AC Milan management are now reflecting on his future.

As we reported yesterday, Kalulu sustained a strain on his medial collateral ligament and will immediately begin conservative treatment of the problem. However, he is expected to miss four to six weeks.

As a reminder, Kalulu suffered a ruptured tendon in the game against Napoli four months ago and Sunday was the first time in 140 days that he had been named in the starting line-up. Now, he will have to sit out again.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) reports this morning, Kalulu arrived on a free transfer from Lyon and was the revelation of the Scudetto-winning season. He and Fikayo Tomori formed a centre-back duo that kept nine clean sheets in the last 11 league games.

However, he did not maintain the same performance levels last season and the current campaign has been almost completely compromised by physical problems. In the questions that the club asks itself regarding the defence of the future, Kalulu’s future is one of them.

The paper states that if there is a good offer ‘he will probably leave’. The 23-year-old undoubtedly has big potential still, and given he joined on a free any sale would be a pure capital gain.

  1. nobody will buy him now. we gotta nurse him back and sell at peak value. we might get 10-15 for him now and honestly it shows poor precedent to sell after such “hardships”

    1. Agreed, at most he’ll be loaned …. maybe with option or obligation based on nr of games played

I suspect a thorough evaluation will be done at the beginning of next season, especially between Kalulu and Terracciano, right now Kalulu seems at a higher level on Pioli’s list

  2. This is an interesting case. Given that we will need a strong budget to get proper reinforcements at ST, DM and CB, without selling stars, selling Kalulu for 10-15m would be very helpful, but it would mean Calabria will once again be backed up by the ageing and also oft injured Florenzi, or an inexperienced player coming up from the Primavera. I guess there is Terraciano too. It’s a risk, as we’d essentially be sacrificing depth at RB to increase depth at CB.

    1. Cladara played a total of 155min for Milan and has a 4M gross salary. Kalulu played 7371 minutes so far and has been pretty useful. Plays for 2.5M and 500k bonuses. Also gross.

      Not the same at all.

    2. To be fair I think the suggestion you were heartless yesterday was aimed at the fact that your knee jerk reaction to some disappointing news was to simply commodify someone.

Of course the club would sell if this new injury turned into the start of a bigger ongoing problem (he doesn’t have a history of injury problems like Caldara though), I don’t think anyone suggested otherwise. This article is fluff though, so it doesn’t really support your view very much at all.

  3. They’ll just replace him with some bullsh*t moneyball signing like Kelly, Brassier, Chalobah, Kiwior or Adarabioyo. So better stick with him.
