GdS: Maignan suffers 10th injury at Milan as questions over renewal emerge

Mike Maignan leaving the field in pain has become an image that AC Milan fans are sadly now used to, as the goalkeeper suffered yet another injury problem last night in the defeat against Liverpool.

The first warning signs came just a few minutes in. As everyone went to go celebrate with Christian Pulisic after his opening goal, Maignan dropped to the floor in some discomfort with his thigh, and he again required some medical attention.

Maignan then had to raise the white flag when he was clattered into by both Fikayo Tomori and Diogo Jota suffering a bad cut to his thigh, therefore a different problem to the muscle discomfort. He went to the dressing room with his head hidden under his shirt, and left the stadium ‘struggling to walk’.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport write, it is a scene that has unfortunately already been seen at San Siro. Since the goalkeeper left Lille in 2021 to move to Milan, he has already had nine periods of absence due to injury which becomes 10 with last night’s.

From the wrist injury to the repeated calf problems (over four months out between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023), up to the most recent problems with his adductor, Mike is struggling to stay healthy.

Yet Milan have already started negotiations for the renewal of his contract expiring in 2025. As his colleague Alisson also said on the eve of the match, Maignan is among the best in the role, but doubts about his physical condition have been creeping in among the Rossoneri fans for some time now.

The question is obvious: is it worth extending the trust in the Frenchman, complete with a raise, without guarantees of always having him available?

  1. You could be the best gk in the world but if your injured for 3 months minimum of each season your not worth keeping. Also, he’s a good gk don’t get me wrong. But he isnt the same as the scudetto year. Nobody is really, but I’d be totally fine getting some money for him next season.

  2. If it was just Maignan then it’d be one thing but Milan have had injury problems going back over a decade.

I refuse to believe in 2024 there’s no solutions for managing the injuries to players like Maignan. Even if he’s allowed time to properly rehabilitate, we need to get this guy fixed because world class keepers are not that common.

Meanwhile with the rate this season is going maybe this is the season for a final reset where we actually given youth players like Torriani a chance.

  3. The only good thing fonseca and his fukcing friends have done is to select Torriani as number 2 goalie. Could possibly turn out to be a new Donnarumma …. though i doubt it!!!!

  4. Renewing him or not ,it depends on the club ambition.
You cannot find a better goalkeeper than Mike for the price we have bought him. If you sell him then don’t expect a big price to be in last year of his contract and AC Milan doesn’t trust his fitness then how come a new club would pay 30/40 million for injury prone goalkeeper in last year of his contract.
Milan will get 10/15m for his sale next year.
Rather I would keep him with 5/6m fixed salary and bonuses on appearances.

But before bring a good goalkeeper coach than complaining about Mike injuries. It worked well with dida but the injury record increased since last 2years
