GdS: Maignan another certified star in Milan’s armoury – Pioli can rely on a true No.1

By Oliver Fisher -

One of the standouts from AC Milan’s defeat to Liverpool was the performance of goalkeeper Mike Maignan, who was exceptional between the posts.

As Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) writes this morning, Maignan was the best on the field for Milan and such is the paradox of the goalkeeper role. Maignan leaves Anfield with his head held high in what was a high pressure game where he was kept busy for all 95 minutes.

Milan will need to collect points in the next group matches in order to have a chance of going through, but the Rossoneri know they can count on one more star in Maignan. After the Salah penalty he saved and the subsequent reaction stop on Jota’s rebound effort, everything is there to suggest the Rossoneri have a real shot stopper.

Maignan motivated his team-mates and made himself heard on set pieces, and he will have time to make up for the three goals he let in, none of which were really his fault. The 25-year-old has the qualities to grow further and the personality to become a leader very quickly.
