GdS: Milan set for summer squad overhaul but Maldini and owners must share vision

A very important summer transfer window awaits for AC Milan but they must first of all see if Champions League qualification is secured.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) report this morning, transfer strategies must be drawn up in view of the window opening but first a compromise must be found between the owners and the management.

Both before and after the two legs against Inter, technical director Paolo Maldini asked for investments to try to fill the gap in terms of squad depth which was there for all to see during the Nerazzurri’s 3-0 aggregate win in the Euroderby.

The management are looking at profiles such as Marko Arnautovic of Bologna who is 34, but the ownership (first Elliott Management, now RedBird Capital) would instead like to sign young players on a low salary that can grow over time.

The contrasts in the past between Maldini and the owners are well known and much will be decided by Milan’s placement in the league at the end of the season, because a ‘relegation’ to the Europa League could change everything.

Whatever happens, the feeling is that there will be a mini revolution with several players ready to leave such as Mirante, Tatarusanu, Dest, Bakayoko, Ibrahimovic, Adli (on loan), Rebic, Origi, Messias and Ballo Tourè.

More than ten players could leave, so at least 6-7 investments will be needed to inject new quality into the squad and bridge that gap which Maldini highlighted.

  1. Yes. More youngsters who Pioli says “aren’t ready”. We need more CDK’s. Preferably costing 30M€ each and delivering absolutely nothing next season – unlike already proven professionals who have been scoring in Serie A for years and years.

    1. Part of the solution to this is to get rid of Pioli. How do you dominate the dominant Napoli of “Kvaradona” and Osimhen over the course of four games (2-1-1 record that should have been 2-2-0 or 3-1-0 as we were the better team in the fall leage match) and yet lose four of five games to Inter? How can you not beat the likes of relegation battling Cremonese and Spezia? Regardless of the squad quality vis-a-vis a title run it is more than capable of beating Spezia and Cremonese. The answer is Pioli, who has no clue how to break down teams employing a low block. Plain and simple. The club has a policy of signing young talent that the coach won’t play? Fire the coach. This is the most important change the club can make this summer over any player acquisition. He wasn’t even the long term manager in mind for this project to begin with. Thanks for the 19th scudetto and a random trip to the CL semis, but the time has come to take a step forward in the coaching department as well.

  2. Domenico Berradi is 18m according to transfermarket, although this seems low. Look at his stats:

    2015–16 31 7
    2016–17 25 10
    2017–18 33 5
    2018–19 37 10
    2019–20 32 14
    2020–21 30 17
    2021–22 34 15
    2022–23 24 10

Perfect for our right wing. Only 28.

    1. You forgot that some people here have been saying “He’s too old. He’s too slow”-mantra already for years… 😀 😀 😀

If we had actually bought him in the summer, Milan wouldn’t have lost to Sassuolo (as he was involved with 3-4 goals that day). With those points alone Milan would have been much closer to finishing in TOP4 this season. And let’s say he would have had a “worse than normally” season here and scored and assisted only half of the goals he usually does. He’d still have more goals and assists than Saele & Messias combined. Some of the goals would definitely brought us AT LEAST 3-6 point more. That would have pretty much secured the TOP4 spot.

  3. Every year, we have the same squad overhaul story and end up doing very little. We need 2-3 starters and our current ones can be decent bench. That’s all. keep it simple guys.
I really dont mind saladman or Krunic AS BACKUPS (for example). But watch, they’ll buy Brahim, Vranxx and bring back Zlatan and Florenzi and say, “hey we bought 2 guys and since Zlatan and Florenzi barely played, they are like new signings “
