GdS: Meeting between Leao and Maldini ended abruptly due to ‘awkward answers’

By Oliver Fisher -

A meeting took place between Rafael Leao and Paolo Maldini over his renewal but it ended rather abruptly, according to a report.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews), Milan made an offer to Leao that would have seen him extend his contract until 2027, but that offer has been left without a response because the parties no longer speak to each other.

The most recent rupture was cause by the Portuguese winger’s attitude on the subject of the release clause, which he wanted to lower from the current €150m down to €70m or a maximum of €80m, which Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara are not willing to accept.

Instead, Maldini and Massara were willing to eliminate it altogether and let the market decide the price. Maldini tried to speak to Leao through a one-on-one meeting but it did not bring the desired effects, in fact there are those who swear that the dialogue ended abruptly with Maldini who left disappointed by Leao’s ‘awkward answers’.

  1. Sounds like he’s doing a Kessie, probably agents working in the background telling him to act a certain way until they can officially negotiate a bosman deal.

The awkward answers are perhaps because Maldini asked a direct question and Leao didn’t wanna lie, so mumbled something vague

  2. The 80mil release clause is a nice way of telling Milan that he wants out, cowardly but clever. So maybe the renewal is not necessary anymore. Let’s cut our losses, sell and reinvest that money wisely…

  3. Milan is signing a new fitness trainer or Head of performance,
Can we please also sign someone that can negotiate contracts. 🙏
And watch what happens, fans will start turning on leao as they did with the other 4 players because of Maldini incompetence.
When this window closes tonight, Leao essentially has 12 months left on his contract.
Another great job by Paolo Maldini

    1. Oh I dunno… Tomori, Tonali, Calabria, Krunic, Kalulu, Hernandez, Bennacer. Maldini has signed extensions with those guys and I’m probably missing a few from the list too. Maldini cannot put a gun on Leao’s head and demand him to sign. He clearly doesn’t want to sign and that’s it. Time to sell.

          1. Ha ha 😂.
Kalulu signed new contract that pays him 2 mil a year. Two million. A million less than what Florenzi and Calabria make. If some other team really wanted Kalulu, he would have been gone or at least asked for higher salary.
Bennacer? Ha ha. Who wanted Bennacer I really wanna know?
Who? He was a back up until 6 months ago. The only reason why he is a starter is not because he outplayed the starter but only because the starter left and Maldini didn’t replace him.

          2. “Kalulu signed new contract that pays him 2 mil a year. Two million. A million less than what Florenzi and Calabria make. If some other team really wanted Kalulu, he would have been gone or at least asked for higher salary.”

Spoken like a true market analyst – or di Marzio. LOL.

          3. It just common sense.
Do you know why these players that Maldini can’t resign are asking the money they are asking? Because there is another club out there offering them that money.
If you make 100k a year and another company is trying to get you to come and work for them and is offering you 150k, the 1st thing you are going you do is ask your current employer for a raise that will at least come close to that offer or you are leaving.
No one wanted or offered more for tomori, kalulu Bennacer, Tonali, Calabria, krunic, Saelemakers, or whoever else Maldini managed to resign.
Bennacer is too small and can’t pass forward. Outside of Italy, he can only maybe play in Spain, but they have plenty of players like him over there. Chelsea, Arsenal, and Liverpool are fighting to sign a midfielder, even offering 120 million for Enzo. Why didn’t they come for Bennacer

          4. “No one wanted or offered more for tomori, kalulu Bennacer, Tonali, Calabria, krunic, Saelemakers, or whoever else Maldini managed to resign.”

I love it how you have aaaaaall the facts in your little head. Did you hear these facts from the agents who called to tip you off about everything other clubs think – or don’t think? 😀

  4. So he wants to pocket a signing bonus and then leave in 6 months. Nice.
Said it million times already. You do not enter into last 2 years of players contract. Either renew or sell. After that the player has all the power.

  5. That is so rude from him. Wants a rise with lower value for the club.
Footballers now has such a low respect to their employer and fans.
Why can’t you go with parting gift for fans and people who kept you even when you were down. If average players like Grealish comanded 100 mil pounds, why does he doubt himself to command at least the same amount when he goes. I’m sure Milan will let you go for sufficient offer.
Milan let Kaka go Real instead of Man. City even when City offered more.

  6. I have said it before. Milan way of negotiating contracts sucks. They should always have a lawyer around and get the player to commit to a number/terms. Pen it down and get it drafted as an agreement. Player must sign it as per his request. Club holds the option to exercise it. Boss of Milan will be consulted and once he signs, a deal is in place. Right now players are changing the goal post every 1-2 months. Pure waste of time ding dong here and there.

  7. Rookie management. He should have been sold this winter merkato. Everyone lnew that he wants and wanted to leave. Take the money and run. Let him warm up the bench somewhere. Maldini should cash in now while they still can.

  8. Please sell him.

He’s one of the reasons things don’t work.
Every opponents knows how to play against him.
He always do the same thing, try 1-3 overstep and then try to run.
It’s beginning to look like the situation whit Soso but on the other flank.
Leao is fast and have a good touch on the ball, but he’s have not a good eye for the game and är to selfish.

A plan wold be to try a swapdeal whit PSG. Leao Vs Hernandez and some money.
We put Teo as leftwinger and his brother as a left defender. For the remaining money we can try to sign a good rigthwinger on lone (and of course option to buy).

Teo is a better player than Leao and it will be a boost in the morale to get his brother in. And the rigthflank. Well can it get worse?
Suddenly Girud will get the passes he need and Diaz have someone that he can cooperate better whit.
