GdS: Red cards and flops – Milan abandoned by leaders again in a big game

By Oliver Fisher -

In the aftermath of yet another derby defeat for AC Milan against Inter, the question once again has to be asked about where the leaders of the team were.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) looks back not only at last night’s game but also the two legs against Roma and the other difficult moments in the last couple of seasons.

Yesterday too, as in the Europa League, all the Rossoneri’s key players appeared beaten on a psychological level before they were outplayed and lost 2-1.

The big flop

The paper talks about the performance of Rafael Leao which, once again, is hard to put a positive spin on. Just like against Roma he did not have an impact, except in the final minutes when he was relocated to the left and manages to put in some dangerous balls.

The fault is not only his: his position on the pitch as a lone striker did not help him so questions must be asked of Stefano Pioli. As a centre-forward, a role he hadn’t played for a long time, Leao remained removed from the attacking build-up for almost the entire match, at least until he was moved to his area of expertise.

It was a reckless move by Pioli who forced his best player into a role he was clearly not meant to play in. However, it is also clear that from someone like Leao – in matches like this and in crucial moments – something more is always expected in terms of attitude.

Sadness and anger

Leao was not the only player to disappoint on the pitch at San Siro. Mike Maignan appeared to be caught off guard by Marcus  Thuram’s goal and Tomori also had a very confused performance, as he did in Rome.

On a mental level, perhaps both Theo Hernandez and Davide Calabria disappointed most of all as they got two red cards – which will keep them out of the match against Juventus on Saturday – in the final minutes. In the excitement of such an important match on a psychological level, more calm is expected from two leaders in the dressing room.

Finally there is the Olivier Giroud case: yesterday he was more of a spectator than a protagonist, starting from the bench. His arrival added some more concerns for the Nerazzurri defence but overall he didn’t manage to change much.

The image at the end of the match is of a sad and disconsolate Giroud who probably knows that this will have been the last derby. From the point of view of commitment and application, even on bad days, he never held back but AC Milan will have to do it without him next year.

  1. It was like watching someone good playing someone crap on FIFA. We were 2-3 paces behind inter all game. We couldn’t string passes together, our touch was pretty woeful….

Then comes the Chukwueze, Okafor question. Both looked good when introduced. Pulisic appears burnt out: the false 9 idea wasn’t a bad one, the selection was. Put Okafor there, then allow Chukwueze and Leao to bomb in behind.

The inter problem is now almost unresolvable unless there’s serious change to the coaching staff. Inzaghi isn’t even an elite manager!!

The red cards were unacceptable but there probably years of frustration. Calabria worked his hide off last night, he was shouting at the defence trying to organise. The first goal was something under13s are taught to defend against.

Pioli has to go now, I mean it’s probably 12 months overdue but we need an elite manager.

    1. Pioli is responsible for the bad starts we had all season , falling behind after 20mins I literally don’t know how many times ,always needing to climb a mountain each time.
As for the first goal , it was clear one of Leao or Puli did not take his man. Acerbi being Inters last man is usually taken by the CF. In a game of such magnitude it is beyond me how the team can be so casual.
I agree 100% about Pioli, by now everything he built when we won the scudetto has been lost. Time for a new tactician who can create a team unit again .

  2. Glad that the two captains showed some fighting spirit but… absolutely in the WRONG way. Unnecessary suspensions in the match that will probably decide the 2nd place in the league.

    1. We’re still five points ahead. We don’t have to win. But imo this is the game I want to win. Inter felt over from start. This game we have to win. Otherwise we will have lost sooo many big games this years. And I hate juve, so we have to win 🙂

      1. Hmm… Maybe I was a bit hasty as I just checked the rest of the fixtures. Milan does have easier matches (ON PAPER THAT IS!!!) than Juve. But then again… Those “easy” matches have always been Pioli’s weakness. So… It will be a struggle all the way to the finish line.

  3. No leaders in the team unfortunately. Another group collapse in another big game.

We need “balls” in this team. Is there such a position? Needs to be created.

    -What positions do you play?
-I play with and drag by the balls!
    -You’re perfect for Milan.

    🤦‍♂️
