GdS: Milan cannot afford to ignore the league – why a top four finish is vital

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan will meet Inter in the semi-finals of the Champions League, but both clubs are embroiled in a heated battle to try and get in the top four.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via MilanNews) this morning, Milan and Inter will play for a place in the Champions League final, but after Juventus’ 15-point deduction was revoked – for the time being – both clubs are outside the top four places.

Finishing in the top four in Serie A guarantees automatic access to the next edition of the Champions League and not qualifying would have negative economic implications and could force a more restrictive summer mercato.

For example, if Milan finished in fourth position, they would collect around €50-60m when factoring in the UEFA prize money and ticket sales, while a higher figure was earned this season thanks to getting past Tottenham and Napoli.

Even with two Euroderbys on the horizon, Milan cannot afford to ignore their league form, especially given that after the game against Lecce a trip to face Roma (currently in fourth) at the Stadio Olimpico awaits.

In the event of non-qualification for the top European club competition, the transfer market would suffer a lot. With top four, the hopes of renewing Leao’s contract increase, as do those of retaining Brahim Diaz.

Furthermore, there would be room to invest a bit more in reinforcements that could improve the squad. With a fifth place, or even lower, not only would it make negotiations tougher but even Stefano Pioli’s position could come under question.

  1. The journalists are paid to write this crap? Getting to the SFs or final brings in far more revenue than we could have dreamed off. One year in the Europa League changes nothing. I’d rather Milan invest in Italians than spend money on crap like Okafor, Ziyech and others we’ve been linked with.

    1. It actually changes a lot.
If we miss out on playing in the top competition in football, our top players like Maignan, Theo and Leao most likely won’t wanna stay and play in the Europa league while there are other clubs out there that can offer them more money and the opportunity to play against the best. Leao still hasn’t signed his contract btw.
If we miss on UCL also we wont be able to attract better quality players to come and improve the squad. Players want to compete against the best. Why would a player choose Milan who isn’t known to pay high salaries and also can’t give you UCL football when other clubs can give you both.
If Milan loses their best players, because of missing top 4, who says that Milan will only play in the Europa league for 1 year. The other teams will get stronger, while we get weaker. If we cant get top 4 in this weak serie A where the guarantees come that we would get top 4 next season?
Missing top 4, would be a major step back for Milan with huge consequences and major changes incoming.
      Top 4 is a must

      1. Exactly bro, these guys don’t understand the definition of sustainability and that means consistently every season Qualifying for the UCL, going far in it is just a bonus to be honest but the main key thing is top 4
