GdS: Three targets for two roles – Milan’s January business far from over

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli strongly hinted in his press conference yesterday that the management are looking to make two signings, and they have some names in mind.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes this morning that Milan are looking for another signing for the centre-back department and also a central midfielder too following the sale of Rade Krunic.

Even if Theo Hernandez playing centrally and Yacine Adli being used as a regista has eased the emergency a bit, Pioli made it clear yesterday that he considers the depth to be a bit thin in both areas.

Lilian Brassier is an option for the centre-back position, and Brest have resigned themselves to selling him because he has a deal expiring in June 2025. The Rossoneri want to get him for less than the €10-12m requested, while Brassier wants Milan and has put an offer from Monaco on stand-by.

Why are Milan taking time? Mainly because there are alternative options being evaluated too, such as Trevor Chalobah who is expected to leave Chelsea. The Olivier Giroud, Christian Pulisic and Ruben Loftus-Cheek operations show how good relations are between the two clubs.

Milan can try to discuss a loan with option to buy, therefore an operation that would be very similar to the one that brought Fikayo Tomori to Milanello four years ago: they paid €1m for a six-month loan and in June decided to invest the €28m to buy him permanently.

The potential of Chalobah – who came through the academy at Chelsea just like Tomori – is unquestionable. However, the issue is his condition because the Englishman has just returned from a long-term knee injury and will need to get into a rhythm. I

Nemaja Matic is an idea for the midfield and he has no problems with his rhythm given he has 19 appearances for Rennes across all competitions, of which 16 were as a starter. He will turn 36 in June, but he has international experience, physical strength and versatility.

Above all, he has a more than affordable price. Rennes bought him for €3m and by the end of the window he will leave the club because his rift with the French club is now irreparable.

A week ago they announced that Matic was not showing up for training and he responded on social media claiming ‘personal reasons’ prevented him from doing so. Milan are at the window.

    1. redbird and moncada needs to resign ASAP from ac milan scouted him and pushing to sign popovic for 4-5 months and watch him join napoli instead and now want 36 yr old nobody to help adli wow . or a nobody 24 yr old winger from portugal

      1. Agree. There’s no point on spending so much time, effort, and budget to scout someone and ends up with a no go just because a slight difference here and there.

    2. Popovic is a primavera player. He wouldn’t even play for the first team if he signed…. Instead Napoli sign him and loan him out immediately. That’s how convinced they were.

      1. Yeah, he’d go to our Primavera as well, that’s not the point. Who ever said that he’d be the new Pato who directly entered the first 11 in more / less the same age?

Popovic was also approached by the likes of City and Juventus. That should tell us something. We scouted him for some times (and there’s also a budget in scouting no?), he even decided not to extend his contract. In the end just to miss out for a barely million or two.

And this is not the first time. That’s also the point.

  1. No to all 3, Chalobah is useless, lazy and injury prone, Matic is slow, temperamental and old, Brassier is untested and a risk as never played in a top league.
Surely we must look at serie A expereinced signings, so obvious we need players who can just walk into the team and don’t need months to acclimatise, go all out for Buongiorno or even Baschiroto and if we need a midfielder we can look at Pessina from Monza, Cataldi from Lazio or even better Ricci from Torino (unlikely unless we spend big)
We need to stop looking at foreign options, especially in the January mercato, we need serie A experience surely.

    1. true with cheap deals and mediocre players we arent getting better but worse . we are gonna at the stage that we arent looking to fight for anything and be happy with just playing cl every yr no trophies nor prgress in any eu competion just happy with eu matches this management and moncada needs to resign ASAP

    2. Right.. because in the current team there is currently NO Serie A experience whatsoever? We need strictly Italians for Italian experience? LOL!!!

      Right Wing much?
