GdS: Milan consider Colombo’s maturation complete – he will return and stay

By Oliver Fisher -

Lorenzo Colombo is not even a third of the way through his loan spell with Monza yet, but AC Milan already have a plan regarding his future beyond the end of the season.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) report that Milan plan to extend Olivier Giroud’s deal by one season and sign a striker for him to pass the baton to like Jonathan David, but given the Frenchman will turn 38 next season they also need a third reliable option.

Colombo seems to be the ideal man for the role. Milan will get him back next summer, at the end of his loan at Monza, and he will probably stay this time after various spells in Serie B and Serie A.

The idea is that he would be an upgrade on Luka Jovic who is yet to make any meaningful contribution, while Colombo at 21 years of age now seems mature.

His growth is demonstrated by the numbers: in his first year in Cremona, one goal in 13 appearances. A season later, at SPAL, six in 34 games. Then the leap to Serie A: five goals with Lecce (including the decisive penalty to secure survival) in 33 games, and now three in the first nine appearances with Monza.

Colombo’s record is improving but it is his characteristics which are an added bonus: he is physical thanks to his size but also quick and has a very powerful shot on him.

  1. There’s definitely something there. In my FM24 save 24/25 season he’s killing the back up role. Strong and athletic, he’s maturing really nicely.

  2. Definitely an upgrade over Jovic and an adequate 3rd striker but anything more than that would be surprising. He scores very few goals to ever lead the line but hopefully he improves as the season goes on.

      1. At 21 Giroud scored 14 goals. But it was in the 3rd french league. His first season in ligue a he did 12 goals.
Scamaca did 8 goals at 21 yo. At 22 he did 16..
Colombo so far did 5 goals last season and 3 this. So keep your pants on

        1. Why? Exactly what I said, Giroud did not even see the 1st league at that age, let alone score a goal. Scamacca, where did he score those goals? Not in Serie A. Colombo is ahead of them at his age…

          1. If you say ahead because he has had better opportunities at a younger age, then so be it. For me (and this is just my opinion), he doesn’t pass the eye test as a starter for a top club and the statistics back it up

          2. season 20/21 scamaca was at genoa, had 8 goals. so that was 26 games and 8 goals in his first seasaon in serie a. Colombo had 33 games last season and 5 goals. his first season in serie a.
Why do i need to tell you this? Cant you look it up before you start shaiting on a player? And everyone knows Giroud was a slow starter but once he started he regulary scored 10+ goals a season if he was on the field.
If Colombo will have half of a career Oli has it will be a huge success.

          3. flyingturtle yes, but he was over 21 if we are talking about that. Anyway, none of the mentioned players looked like starters for any good team at 21. And still they made it. You need to believe in your youngsters and give them chances. So I can say Colombo is not a player for Milan when he gets his chances. Milan didn’t give a chance to more than a few young players that did great later, from Aubameyang to Bellanova or Kerkez.

    1. According to Maldini’s Heir, he’s the next Shevchenko, as is any striker to come through our primavera. If they don’t become the next Shevchenko it’s because we “broke” them by loaning them out. We already missed out on mighty Cutrone.

      1. Well, that does happen too but not every youth player succeeds either regardless of the opportunities provided. If we could even produce one Shevchenko-calibre player I think we would all be ecstatic.

        1. And Colombo ain’t him. He will never be better than a backup for a mid-table team. Time to sell him and get a few euros towards buying someone who could lead the line.
