GdS: ‘Flame reignited’ – Milan consider David swoop amid doubts over Abraham

Tammy Abraham is yet to fully convince Paulo Fonseca and the AC Milan management, who are as a result plotting a potential free transfer for Jonathan David next summer as per a report.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport this morning, David will leave Lille next summer on a free. The French club have tried and will try in every way to convince him to stay, but so far they have not succeeded and the feeling is that in 2025 he will pack his bags.

The player’s entourage (not only his agent, but also a couple of FIFA agents who are offering him around the top leagues) are in the meantime is actively looking for a destination that will allow him to make a big jump. Given his numbers in the last few seasons, it is a great opportunity.

The Rossoneri currently have Morata as their main man in attack, then Abraham – on whom a decision will have to be made at the end of the season given that he is on loan from Roma – and Jovic, who was excluded from the Champions League list and could leave in January or likely next summer.

David is one of the well-known profiles because he has been scouted extensively for a while now. The directors thought about him in the summer before turning to Joshua Zirkzee and then to Morata, yet now a golden chance is about to present itself.

With the Ligue 1 club, David has 92 goals in 196 official matches. In Ligue 1 he has always hit double figures with a best return of 24 goals in the 2022-23 league campaign. He also started the 2024-25 season strong, with eight goals in 13 appearances, including one that beat Real Madrid in the Champions League.

He can play both as a centre-forward and as a second striker, even though he is more technical (and quick) than physical (178cm tall). The Canada international is considered a great worker and, off the pitch, a very good guy. In short, there would be no problems fitting into the locker room.

The Portuguese coach knows him very well since, at Lille, he coached him for two seasons, probably the best of his career: 26 goals in 40 games in 2022-23 and then 26 goals in 47 matches the season after.

Fonseca had him play as a first striker in a 4-2-3-1, with Remy Cabella or Yusuf Yazici behind him. At Milan there is Morata who, despite being a centre forward, is covering the position of second striker in the 4-2-3-1 in the new formation launched in the derby.

Could the two co-exist? The answer to the question must be given by Fonseca and the Rossoneri management, but in the meantime David is on the list of possible targets. In this case too, the size of the commissions – which will be high but not at the levels of the Zirkzee deal – and the salary must be evaluated.

Certainly, compared to the Dutchman, the advantage is that of not having to pay a transfer fee. However, there is competition: in Barcelona they are convinced that Laporta will go for him, but Atletico Madrid are also after him, as are teams from the Premier League.

Domestically Inter have asked for information, while Napoli were interested before they decided to sign Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea, so there is no shortage of competitors to try and seize the opportunity.

The possible David operation is linked to the choice that Milan will make regarding Abraham. Roma wanted €25m to make it a permanent deal for the Englishman but he ended up arriving on loan, with any decision linked to Alexis Saelemaekers’ future (he went the other way) and, now, the possible arrival of David.

  1. We all know that they gonna go with David if the coach has a technical solution for the team going forward. The problem is him being a free agent amd how the vultures will start circling around him. And we all know Milan do not partake in auctions. I’d say get him in Jan otherwise we will easily be outmuscle come the summer. Would still like to know how this affects the coach’s formation if he is still around…

  2. If we wanted David we should’ve already made a deal. The club where he is going has probably already bought a house for him.
Not to mention David and Abraham are pretty different types of ST. You either need one or the other. One of them is closer to a poacher the other to a target man

  3. Inter will sell Thuram for huge profit and sign David on free instead.

That’s how you rinse and repeat. If you have skilled sporting director that is.
