GdS: Milan will make a decision on coach soon – the candidates in the running

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan intend to make the decision on their new coach very soon so the situation does not drag into the summer, with a number of names still in the running.

As has been reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, Milan are now entering their final days with Stefano Pioli as the coach and everyone at the club knows that a new person will be in the hot seat when the 2024/25 season begins.

There is nothing to gain from Milan’s perspective for this coaching hunt to drag deep into the summer transfer window, as many signings will be dependent on the coach who comes in.

If they are to make an appointment soon, Milan will have to narrow down the very long list of coaches that are in the running.

Sergio Conceicao is one of the favourites but he still has important games at FC Porto to navigate before he can focus on the idea of a new job. Fellow Portuguese Paulo Fonseca is being chased by Marseille and his current club, Lille.

Names like Roberto Martinez and Domenico Tedesco have been mentioned but they both need to take part in Euro 2024, whilst Mark van Bommel is a name that Zlatan Ibrahimovic is favouring.

Heading outside of Europe, two coaches in the Middle East are linked. Christoph Galtier could leave Al Duhail for Milan, whilst Marcelo Gallardo is also an option.

  1. Conceicao earns €3.5m a season at the moment, Pioli is on €4m, Gallardo is currently earning $22m a season. I don’t think he takes the pay cut, but his accolades for River Plate speaks for itself, Motta and Conceicao are the cheapest options with Conceicao fitting the bill and the playing style the most.

  2. Well, at the moment Gallardo’s earning nothing, and he’ll know that only the very richest European clubs would pay close to that for a manager, and not for him – not yet (based on lack of European experience).

That idea is growing on me to be honest, but I still think (and am happy about it) it will be Conceicao.

    1. He’s pretty good, he’s got a better record than Marcelo Bielsa, which says a lot. My only issue with Gallardo is he gets uncomfortable outside of South America, he did it as a player too, even after winning Ligue 1 player of the year and being brilliant at Monaco he left, him and Marcelo Salas, Riquelme and Ariel Ortega all had that in them. Their talent was that damn good but they struggled to adapt to Europe even when they found success.

  3. I expect a flood of headlines the next few months like these;
The next 48/72 hours will be crucial
    Decision near- what to expect
Sources claim decision is near on new ACM coach

And then Pioli will continue of course, as he is almost a guarantee for a 5th place minimum, which is enough for CL qualification which is the prime target for Redbird.

    Boring.

    1. Buddy we will finish 2nd with even more points than when we won the league. It isn’t all doom and gloom. We should however be challenging for the title next season. We did much better than last season. Which was terrible. We have a something to build on, like the season before we won the Scudetto, only difference is we are in a much better position with a stronger lineup. All we need are a few reinforcements, and getting rid of some dead wood.

      1. Year we won the league we had 86 points. Most we can get this season is 80. This still would be the 2nd best finish for points in the last 10 years and only 2 points behind the 2011 Scudetto.

Considering Pioli was without pur entire CB department for almost 6 weeks, it’s hard to put all the blame on this guy. He found a way for us to not be so reliable on Leao/Theo and could break a record if Jovic nets another goal to have 5 goal scorers in double digits for the first time since the 1950s.

Pioli has lost the locker-room (from our perspective) but let’s be careful for what we wish for – Seedorf, Inzaghi, Montella, Giampaolo. Highest win percentage of any coach since Ancelotti.

    2. Would you prefer us finishing outside of the 6? Or 10th like we did in 97/98 and 2014/15, or how about 11th like 96/97?

Yes of course, obviously, what else, naturally….
Such a questions deserves such an answer.

    3. This is a fair point, but the bigger picture is that AC Milan having its own stadium is crucial. In how clubs run modern stadiums the ability to has a cash flow which is not only higher but consistent is gold. I think internally Redbird will do everything to keep AC Milan as close to 1st place in Serie A. They will keep doing what is needed to accomplish this, but obviously the fans will not support it and there will be that season which is break the camels back and the fans will turn on them if they don’t deliver.

    4. That’s exactly what will happen. But I don;t think it will drag on for months. I think Milan already know who the coach is and will likely announce it soon after season’s end. (I hope anyway)

  4. What a bunch of clowns
This is no different to Yonghong Li years ago
Taking this long to select a coach because they are broke
I will not be surprised if they don’t get anyone and Pioli remains another year
    Pathetic

    Milan deserves better

    1. Do u really think this milan management are will to pull out such financial strength to hire a better upgraded coach than the likes of pioli ,we are only going to change the managers name but certainly I don’t see any upgrade coming in ,what milan needs is two or more established players and not prospects, milan need leaders and team oriented players on the field

  5. I don’t think pioli is the problem of milan ,cos I remember a period wen most of the first team players were injured ,he still found his way around it ,I don’t see any coach except we hire the services of guardiola doing better than pioli looking at the present squad and the injury crisis we had this season .

    1. 5years ago Pioli is the best option. But today we are unable to win big matches and sometimes we don’t understand what was team playing for. If it’s players problem we can understand.
But it’s very clear, Pioli doesn’t want to change. He do the same tactics and our rival won 6matches against us with 17:2goals ratio not even a single draw!
Loosing against roma was another disaster in Europe.

We are loosing many big matches.

Maybe Pioli also needs a change, not just for Milan.

He was with Milan for 5good years, he should be proud of and we respect him.
We should move on to another coach.
We don’t have to stick to same coach all life.

Sachi, capello, ancelloti didn’t won any big cups before Milan. Maybe there’s someone who can repeat and can help this Milan play better in Europe which is important financially and also to attract better players.

We have seen 2europa league and champions league with Pioli. That’s enough
      Let’s move on..

  6. Don Vito de Palma affirms that Jürgen Klopp said to take Milan in 2025-2026 season. He wants to respect Liverpool and not coach a rival right after leaving Anfield.

All the names including Lopetegui’s were a smoke screen, it’s rumored that Milan is trying to convince Klopp to take the team this summer.
