GdS: Milan now fully focused on San Donato stadium – all the exciting details

AC Milan are now entirely focused on building and moving into a new stadium in the San Donato area of the city, and lots of exciting details have emerged about the project.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below), the project can start to accelerate rapidly now that Milan have purchased the land on which they plan to build their new stadium. It is a €40m deed, budgeted for by RedBird, which includes design fees, administrative costs, labour costs and more.

At the end of February, San Donato mayor Francesco Squeri will inform the city council of the start of the programme agreement, the table with the Lombardy Region, the Metropolitan City, neighbouring municipalities, the railways, and the Parco Sud Milano that will have to assess and resolve all the problems.

If all were to go to plan, Giorgio Furlani would like Milan to be playing their first match in the new stadium in 2028 or 2029. The 2028 deadline seems fanciful, though. 2029, though, is when Milan turns 130 years old.

So far, the understanding is that Milan will build a 70,000-capacity stadium which has two rings, premium and hospitality seats, the largest screens in Italy, restaurants in amongst the modern facilities, state-of-the-art facilities for the players, and no covered roof or retractable pitch.

As well as the stadium itself, there will be a new headquarters nearby, a 3,000 square metre museum, a Milan story, a hotel, an entertainment complex with a 3,000-seat arena, and an energy production centre.

In terms of the transport, there are uncertainties about infrastructure, road conditions, safety, but the railway is expected to be increased from two to four lines, increasing the capacity from 8,000 to almost 20,000 people per hour.

Milan also have plans for 230,000 square metres of green space and five kilometres of bicycle lanes in a narrow area between the motorway and the eastern bypass.
