AC Milan are yet to reach an agreement with Rafael Leao over the contract renewal and with the summer approaching fast, Paolo Maldini and Ricky Massara could be forced to make a very tough decision.
The negotiations between the parties have been ongoing for several months and Milan have even put an offer on the table: €6m per year until 2026. However, an agreement hasn’t been reached yet, also due to the fact that many parties are involved.
This was reported by today’s edition of Gazzetta Dello Sport (via MilanNews). Milan could thus be forced to make a very tough but necessary decision in the summer. In case of no agreement by then, they will have to sell the winger.
Many big clubs are monitoring the situaton of Leao and Milan simply cannot take the risk of trying to secure a renewal after the summer. They know that all too well after the departures of Calhanoglu, Donnarumma and Kessie, except this time there is a lot more money at stake.
If he were going to renew, he’d have done it by now. Sell asap.
Its not that easy when the money is far different. Leao with 6M is just same with kessie in barca (but not important player). In EPL, there are many club can give salary 8-12M
Well said. 6M is not enough – it’s not even market value for Serie A. Rabiot (7M) would make more than Leao (6M). Lol. Let’s face it we have no intention of renewing Leao. This is clear. Ownerships strategy is to continue to offer him below market value forcing him to leave. If I were him I would leave as well. Put 7M on the table and offer to pay the fine – and THEN if he rejects that – then of course you sell. But not before you offer the max value and what he wants. So all of this BS wasting time dragging it out solves absolutely nothing. If the strategy was to low ball him and never go past 6M then we should have just sold in January. This is not on the player. This is on management. We drag out and nickle and dime every fkn deal and usually end up on the wrong end of it. Horrible. It’s all PR spin from Redbird. When he requests to leave cause we don’t offer the 7M and pay the fine – they will blame it on the player being “greedy”. And when we sell they will pocket the majority of the $$ and spend little of it on a replacement – and the cycle starts over again. Can’t wait when this happens with Theo and Mike. Same thing. Good times. I’m not delusional. No star player (Theo, Mike, Leao) will stay at Milan forever – we cannot compete with the $ of the EPL, Germany or Spain for that matter. But now is not the time to sell such a player when he has only one year left on his deal, he’s is not even in his peak, the team has not yet built a consistent winner year after year – esp in CL. Like I said if he was asking for EPL money then I get it we sell. But he isn’t. He’s asking to be one of the highest paid players in the league. And that he should. That is reasonable. Sign first then sell in a few years. There will always be someone who will want to sign him even if making 7M season. Did we forget Donnaruma debacle? Some clowns thought no one would pay 8m season for him lol. Ya right. And does anyone really think if we do sell Leao that these owners will spend every single dollar from his sale back into the team????? LMAO! Ya like all of a sudden if we sell him for 100M we will spend 100M on new players???? Ya keep dreaming. Be careful what you wish for gents. The grass isn’t always greener on the other side.
He isn’t worth 7M and. This is serie a/milan not a premier cash loaded club.. so yeah, they offer what they can.
Selling is obvisouly a better option at the moment for Milan. Milan needs at least 3 more season of building and being competitive before they’re able to keep players.. And i’m 85% that the cash generated from sale will go into buying new players, managment was pretty upfront with what is what when it comes to cash for transfers. M&M get 50M if they want more sell someone
“M&M get 50M
if they want more sell someone.”
THANK YOU
7M and debt is madness.
7M alone is still possible but they need to be quick.
“Ownerships strategy is to continue to offer him below market value forcing him to leave.”
For sure 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀 😀
The best market analyst strikes again!
no one in Germany or Spain will offer Leao 12m/yr dont be daft
We need to make fund for next season. Losing prized gems again for free are awful , Sell leao in summer to EPL club then upgrade right side & buy new LW
Well, Kessie worth was 55 million, Donnarumma 65 million and Calhanoglu 35 million, on transfermarkt, in the moment they left Milan. Leao is now 85 million. So it’s not so bigger difference on transfermark page. But OK, no one would gave so much money for these three players BUT more important story is to change transfer policies.
Still Milan could sold those three players a year before contract expiration for at least 30 million per player.
And now is story of Leao. Leao is typicall not happy player at the club, who wants and need more money. If Milan can’t afford him or anyone else – Milan must start selling. There is no guarantee that with Leao Milan will won anything, like this year Milan is struggling to reach 1 of 4 positions. Is that successful? I don’t think so.
So bottom line: every year invest in new perspective players and sell all unhappy and players without impact. Don’t leave them for free.
I agree on everything you said…and we better don’t talk about the swap deal Bonucci – Caldara because I feel ashamed.
I don’t mean that we should have kept Bonucci. Not at all. I am just saying, have a look at what happened there and judge yourself. With this kind of “deals” you are trying to jeopardise the club right from the start. Then all the rest that you said came after…so I am happy that finally someone understands what’s going on here, Maldini? OK a legend on the pitch, but I bet he doesn’t even know what it means dealing with a low budget. Lose all those money while managing a small club and you take them to bankruptcy.
Maldini wasn’t involve with Bonucci-Caldara transfer.
You are right, his business teacher and friend Leonardo did that few days before Maldini stepped in to learn from him. Unbelievable move…Agnelli is still laughing 😂🤣
You are actually right, his business teacher and friend Leonardo did that few days before Maldini stepped in to learn from him. Unbelievable move…Agnelli is still laughing
The question is: If we sell him for 80m-100m, can we buy two or three 20m-30m players for the replacement on each area. Or are we still choosing low budget players cuz of ffp condition
When you sell player like Leao, who have big impact in Milan play, there is no guarantee that replacement will do similar like that. Yes, Milan can than spend more than those 80 million but question is on who.
So it is logical, always is better to sell when you don’t have players signature. Like Roma sold Zaniolo even for low fee. That things happen, but we already read the stories here how Milan is struggling for revenue from players sales compare to top 5 Serie A clubs.
Let’s don’t forget how Napoli last summer transfer market sold their 3 best first team player, and they bring cheap substitute players who are now near best Napoli achievement in more than 30 years.
So transfermarket is roulette game.
“When you sell player like Leao, who have big impact in Milan play, there is no guarantee that replacement will do similar like that. ”
Well… Leao 0+0 in the last 7-8 matches. Not that he guarantees any results either.
80-100M€? Keep dreaming. It’s 50-60€ max. Last year of contract. Lucky to get even that.
Leao should just be sold for Milan to maximize the resources from his sale, and the causion the summer budget.Masara and Maldine can’t fail to buy quality players this time because they know serious serie A teams are in terms of wanting to WIN trophies and scudetto.
Leao will be sold this summer only if someone from ownership steps in or they actually hire someone else to run the sporting department.
If it’s up to ‘Lloyd and Harry’ aka M&M, Leao would be Leaving Milan in the summer of 2024 for free.
To the Maldini fanboys that will get triggered by this comment, look up the names Donnarumma, Calhanoglu, Kessie and Romagnoli.
Follow the pattern.
But probably as per usual they will start blaming the player and his agent for everything. Calling them greedy and liars.
Maldini good, everyone else bad.
Can’t believe this moron still spouting this nonsense 🤦♂️
@ForzaMaldini LOL Fanboy 101:
If you cannot prove a man wrong, don’t panic, you can always call him names.
Small is the number of people who see with their eyes and think with their minds, most are just led by their emotions.
I can’t understand why people blame M & M for the owner’s decisions to not pay the players. M&M don’t hold the purse strings. If the owners won’t pay the going rate, then we will continue to lose players regardless of who is running the sporting side of things. Cheap owners = cheap squad! I have little doubt that Maldini would have preferred to keep all those players and work on further strengthening the squad.
For a millionth time.
the issue isn’t that these players were not kept for the money they have asked which most of them didn’t deserve. I liked Gigio but he isn’t worth 12 mil, like Kessie but he isn’t worth 6-6.5 mil.
Hakan and Romagnoli should have absolutely been resigned for the money they got from inter a d Lazio, but Maldini blew those negotiations as well.
The issue is that those players WERE NOT SOLD AND LEFT WITHOUT MILAN GETTING ANY MONEY BACK. That’s on the dumb and dumber M&M, not on the owners. You don’t need owners money to sell players.
Our squad is weaker because those players left for free and Milan didn’t get any money back from their sales to replace them.
That’s on dumb and dumber M&M not on the owners.

if Milan were to sell Leao, and then get the money from the sale, would the money from the sale can be fully used to buy players.
Let’s say Milan get €80 million from the sale of Leao, can that money be fully used by Maldini & Massara to buy new players?
Not necessarily!
Because it depends on club policy, just like salary restrictions for players.
And the one who makes club policy is the owner.
So your logic if Milan or in this case according to you is Maldini & Massara can sell players, then the money that will be obtained can later be fully used to buy players, is not true.
Are you saying that it’s OK that Maldini didn’t sell those players and let them leave for free, because the owners might not have let him spend the money Milan would have gotten from their sales, even though there is not a single example over the last 5 years where the club sold players and the money were not put back in the squad?
Well said @bob
we lose 5 players that keep us in the champion’s league, and in contention for top 3 spots, we risk losing 70+ million euros from CL income, plus 3 to 4 million per lower final position in the domestic table. They are worth their demands. Gigi didn’t ask for 12 million, PSG gave him that when we refused to give him 6 or 7 he was willing to accept to stay. We could have agreed with Lille for a transfer the next year, or bought Maignan, loaned him back for a season, then sold Gigi for 40 to 70 million that summer. Mike would be the starter the next year. 12 mill transfer for Mike, plus 10 million wages for both players, we would turn in a nice profit off Gigi’s sale. There was options they failed to make use of.
Well said @Kneuch
It isn’t Maldini that refuses to offer them more. He is given limits and maximum offers from his bosses. He isn’t stupid. He knows very well it isn’t worth loosing players, valued at 20 plus million for 1 or 2 million dollars in between their demands, that are in line with their market value and comparable players. It is upper management tying his hands. They put in place ridiculous parameters that do not allow us to retain our best players to ensure we stay competitive.
If he doesn’t accept 6 mil, which is a very generous offer, then he should be sold.
Should have been sold in the summer.
Some people use Rabiot’s bad contract for an average player, to justify giving another average player a bad contract.
I’ll say it again, Leao is a great athlete and poor footballer = Average player.
People will be disappointed when they see the amount of money Leao will be sold for in the summer.
They talk about 80 mil a 100 mil. LOL
The highest offer Milan received for Leao, coming of the best season of his career, was 70 mil from Chelsea, with 2 years left on his contract. Why would make someone think that we would get more than that for him with a year left and playing like crap most of the time, getting benched, getting subbed at half time?
If Leao was such a great player and so many of the rich clubs were interested for him, he would’ve been gone by now.
Get as much as you can for him, use the money properly, ( hopefully with bigger say by Moncada and less by Maldini) and Milan will be a better team next season.
Napoli sold their best defender and best midfielder, invested it properly and this year they are by far the best team in Italy and probably the best in all of Europe. Basically the only difference in Napoli from last year and this year is Kvara. The rest of the starting 11 is the same. Now that’s a great footballer. Performing from day 1 in big games in serie A and in the UCL, something that Leao has never been.
If you swap Kvara and Leao on Milan and Napoli, Milan will get better with Kvara, Napoli will get worse with Leao. He would destroy the flow of their offense immediately
Loooots of facts there by Z. Read it and weep. 🙂
If there is a year left, no one will pay 100 M for him. I think max 50-60, if there is competition between buyers. But this is the way… He should go.
To be honest, Leao has brought Milan a solid number of points over the past two years and it is certain that we would have missed him. But if the joint cooperation does not go further, it is time to part ways! For as high a price as possible… of course. Management has made a lot of financial lapses in recent years, precisely because they insisted on cooperating with some players who had different plans. I sincerely hope that doesn’t happen this time. Management insists on the economy and sustainable operation of the club and I can’t blame them for that, because we see how many clubs in Europe have financial problems due to wastefulness ( except English clubs ). I believe that investing in the playing staff next summer should still be somewhat more generous because of playing in C.L and possible earnings from some players.
Guys we were offering Donnarumma more ffs …
Leao will be sold
Okafor will replace him
The question is for how much we could sell. 100 mil is a dream. hopefully, there will be a bidding war and we could leverage that.
