GdS: Milan impress and Napoli enchant – a battle for the Scudetto could be reignited

By Oliver Fisher -

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport has hypothesised that one of the traditional rivalries in Serie A could well be reignited.

The paper (via PianetaMilan) talks about what could be the duel for the Scudetto in Serie A this season, speculating that Milan and Napoli could ignite a challenge until last day of the season to be crowned the champions given how impressive they have been so far this season.

The two teams are focused on playing to have fun and entertain fans, and this is important because such a free-flowing style lightens the legs and the mind in what are the inevitable challenging points in the season.

Milan have a recognised identity now after winning the league title, with a young core that aim to impress through an intense style of play. Rafael Leao will be expected to make a further leap while Charles De Ketelaere arrived to fix a problem area, so for Milan it is more about quality.

Napoli meanwhile have a deeper squad and it seems that they have not been hurt by the departures of Lorenzo Insigne, Kalidou Koulibaly and Dries Mertens. Kim and Kvaratskhelia have brought quality, while Giovanni Simeone and Giacomo Raspadori have arrived to support Victor Osimhen.

Finally, there is another aspect to consider: Milan, last year, won the Scudetto thanks to the solidity of the defensive duo formed by Pierre Kalulu and Fikayo Tomori. Napoli meanwhile have some defensive inattention, but when the sides meet later this month it will be a fascinating spectacle.

  1. I am a life-long Milan Fan, but if you think Milan’s show compares favourably to Napoli’s, well, have you ever watched football before?
