GdS: Milan leaders did not appreciate Pioli’s post-Salernitana comment

Stefano Pioli is more under pressure than he has ever been at AC Milan, and the club’s leadership did not appreciate one of the things that he said after the draw against Salernitana.

As La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) writes this morning, Pioli is under pressure for a number of reasons, from the ever-worsening injury crisis to the tactical choices he is making within games, but also the way he speaks to the media.

The coach has long been targeted by fans who for months have been challenging him not only for his choices on the pitch but also for his off-field statements in conferences or interviews, where he often has seemed either too stubborn or borderline resigned.

This has now extended to the club’s hierarchy, who did not appreciate one line in particular that Pioli said in his post-match press conference after the 2-2 draw against Salernitana.

“I’m also worried because we need to rediscover the enthusiasm and magic,” he said. Those words for the club were almost like raising a white flag in the face of a thousand unexpected events for which Pioli himself seems unable to find a solution.

Speaking of public statements, in our recent Substack piece we broke down Geoffrey Moncada’s interview with Milan TV in which he discussed his journey to joining the club, the process of scouting players and his vision for the future.

  1. No one wanted to hear these words and everyone were disappointed to hear them. But no one were surprised and the leaders of the team definitely have no justification to be upset with Pioli. The effort they showed was an insult to the badge.

    1. A communication misstep is the worst thing that can happen to this Wall Street ownership. Even when you fail, just say “we’re ambitious” or “we want to win” but never the truth.

  2. Problems are all over the place… Starting from Pioli and Calabrija. Looks like MM16 and partly Leao are bit tired of it, which should not be their excuse, but teem is not united.
On other topics, menagment started a shit show in the summer, and now we bare the fruits.

  3. Pioli doesn’t seem to know how to fix Milan at the moment. Mainly because he doesn’t know what he wants to do. That’s why the team looks so confused.

Often we seem them looking puzzled, not knowing whether to attack or defend. There’s not very much from Midfield to help defense, because he has them push up so high. And the forwards aren’t any help, like Giroud and Leao when defending.

Seems like it’s no coincidence that most of our CB’s are injured and out, because mostly they are the only ones left defending.

Pioli’s attacking approach and the high press and lack of coverage in transition is the problem for the injuries in my opinion.

And in conferences after the games he brings up the same issues, like lack of attention to detail, missing chances, etc etc… Same thing every time after a loss.

So the question is, if you know what the problem is, why aren’t you fixing it? 🙂

  4. I don’t get it, was he wrong?? Leao, Theo, Pulisic, Cheek played like they don’t want to be here.
It was one of the game that could ve decided by your star players. And these star players just spitted on their fans

    1. Who would want to be there when the tactics are trash? When the team isn’t challenging for titles? Whose job is it so motivate players? Look at the passion of Roma. A club that has missed out on the UCL for seasons and had a tough start to the season, but they play for their coach and their colors because their coach motivates them and challenges them. More importantly, say what you will about Mourinho’s style of play, their game plan is clear. They have clear roles and in-game objectives. Not, pass it to Leao and DAI DAI DAI. Pioli is out of his depth, like he was at Lazio, Fiorentina and Inter. He is a mid-table coach more suited for a club like Lecce or Udinese.

    2. Not to defend the players (I don’t), but sometimes this type of attitude denotes the loss of trust between the players and the staff. We’ve saw hints of it when Calabria, Giroud and Leao openly criticized Pioli this season. I think it’s not only us, the fans, who’ve had enough with this staff.
