GdS: Milan prepare Leao-esque renewal for Maignan as Bayern must offer over €100m

Mike Maignan’s current contract with AC Milan will expire in 2026 and negotiations will soon commence over a renewal, per a report. However, the Rossoneri will have to increase the goalkeeper’s salary significantly.

As reported by Gazzetta dello Sport this morning (see photo below), Maignan has returned to his best form recently and thus enters the negotiations in a good position. Milan want to renew his contract, though, and a significant pay rise appears to be on the cards…

Maignan is back to his best

The save on Andrea Belotti against Fiorentina earned Maignan tons of praise on social media. It was even voted the best defence action of March by the Milan fans. Another candidate for the award was the Frenchman’s save on Chytil against Slavia Praha, along with some other good interventions from his teammates.

In any case, from one save to another, Maignan returned to his best and with perfect timing. Milan’s have entered the season finale and the goalkeeper showed that he can be just as decisive as Rafael Leao at the other end. With an expiring contract, he now wants a ‘star renewal’.

Currently, Maignan earns €3.2m per season and his contract will expire in 2026. After some rocky moments this season, the goalkeeper will be hoping that he can keep up the current form, as this could secure him a high salary.

A salary on par with Leao

As the pink newspaper continues, Maignan is far from Leao’s salary at the moment and also what a goalkeeper of his quality should earn. Not to mention that the likes of Ismael Bennacer, Samuel Chukwueze, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Christian Pulisic earn more at €4m.

A significant pay rise is thus to be expected, and it is logical, perhaps in the region of €5-6m as a base with bonuses taking it up to a potential €7m (just like for Leao). On the other hand, this situation cannot be compared to the one of Gigio Donnarumma a few years back in any way, with Maignan still having two years left on his current contract.

On the other hand, Milan are keen on resolving the matter in the coming months and the same goes for Theo Hernandez (also expiring in 2026). In short, the negotiations will soon commence and it remains to be seen if an agreement can be reached (but it seems likely).

Only crazy offers will be considered

As always when it comes to the stars of the team, Milan will only consider offers of at least €100m. Bayern Munich are interested in both Maignan and Hernandez, looking to reinforce these two positions, but it would indeed cost a lot for the German side.

The Rossoneri’s stance, in other words, is to continue with the duo even if there have been worrying reports on the Maignan front in recent months. A salary of Leao’s level is to be expected, though, and that will likely also be the case with Hernandez and his renewal.
