GdS: Milan need the best version of Tomori back – aggression and minimal mistakes

By Oliver Fisher -

Fikayo Tomori has been nothing short of exceptional since he arrived at AC Milan in January of last year, but he has had some struggles so far this season.

La Gazzetta dello Sport recall how Tomori did not even need time to perform at the level Milan demanded after he came from Chelsea. If in a year and a half his defensive errors can be counted on the fingers of one hand, the start of the 2022-23 season has not been so easy.

Stefano Pioli and his staff do not consider it a problem that the Englishman has suffered some lapses of concentration, however the Rossoneri need Tomori to quickly get back to 100%.

As mentioned, he has been nothing but an asset to Milan, having become a symbol of a side that are always attentive, concentrated and intense, but he has made three errors this season as per the report.

Twice the Diavolo still managed to win get the three points (Tomori lost Dzeko for the goal in the derby and lost Orsic in the win over Dinamo Zagreb), but in the third case Giovanni Simeone’s goal result in Napoli’s win as the centre-back reacted late.

La Gazzetta’s average rating so far this season is 5.71 for Tomori which is very low compared to normal. In reality, the analysis of numbers and statistics does not show a drop in Tomori’s performance compared to last season: his figures are similar to those he had recorded in the first seven rounds of Serie A in 2021-22.

The only significant differences – Opta reports – concerns the decrease in interceptions (6 versus 12 a year ago), however offset by the increase in balls recovered (36 versus 31). There is no need to panic, and Tomori has plenty of motivation with the World Cup looming.
