GdS: Milan pursue deal for Serbian defender – ready for the big leap

By Euan Burns -

AC Milan are attempting to sign Serbian defender Strahinja Pavlovic from Red Bull Salzburg this summer to add more quality depth to the back line.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Rossoneri are well aware that a new defender is needed and they wish to sign an established but young player who can develop further at the club.

The 23-year-old Pavlovic was a part of the Serbia squad at Euro 2024 and stood out for his physicality, standing at 1.94m tall.

He joined Monaco from Partizan Belgrade for €10m in 2020 but struggled to make the expected progress in the principality. Loans at FC Basel and Cercle Brugge proved very successful though and eventually he joined RB Salzburg for €7m.

That is where he has blossomed and has become a very important player, who actually almost joined Lazio in the past but a failed medical put paid to the move.

Napoli have shown a lot of interest in Pavlovic, as have some Premier League teams, partly because it seems a bid of €20-25m will be enough to secure his services. The belief is that he is ready to take the next step in his career to a major league.

Pavlovic could be viewed as the replacement for Simon Kjaer who left the club this summer and he would put pressure on other defenders in the squad.

    1. Or getting Lazar is a crying shame, reminds me so much of Boban and Yugovic….

I think Lazar, Dad always causes issues when he is about to sign

  1. He is looking good and quite talented. don’t get me wrong.

But if the rumour is true and we are going to lose Florenzi, in addition of letting Mirante retire, Colombo on loan, and sell Daniel Maldini, then we truly need someone Italian/from Italian academy to fulfill the homegrown quota.

That is if we don’t want to play a team full of kids in the champions league, of course.

Currently the quota is 4 club trained and 4 association trained. And right now we only have

    Calabria (club)
    Gabbia (club)
    Pobega (club)

    Marco Sportiello (association)
    Florenzi (association)

Terraciano will be included when he turn 22.

So currently we can only include 22 players in Uefa list A (player >22 y.o)

    1. When there is some young Italian CB on the market right now… Buongiorno (35m), Calafiori (50m), Caleb Okoli (15m). If we only buy Morata as striker we can afford them.

I’d like Scalvini but he is currently torn his ACL so we need to see if he can back to his previous form, we can’t afford another Caldara.

    2. Admittedly our senior first team is still really thin so we don’t need to be worry yet about the list, but if we can address the issue earlier it’s better right? Currently we have 20 senior players from last year squad plus 6 player coming back from loan. So we need to find home for the players coming back as we can’t include them in list A.

      GK : Maignan, Sportiello, (Devis)

CB : Tomori, Thiaw, Kalulu, Gabbia

      RB : Calabria, Florenzi

      LB : Theo, (Ballo Toure)

CM : Reijnders, Bennacer, RLC, Adli, Musah, Pobega

      AM : (Maldini)

      RW : Pulisic, Chukwueze, (Saelemaker)

      LW : Leao, Okafor

      CF : Jovic, (Colombo), (Origi)

      1. I think the idea is to include Italians from our newly created Milan Futuro. They’re signings not only kids but also Italians in their prime.

Ibra said Milan Futuro players will have possibility to play games for Milan as well also in mid season if necessary.

So in my opinion that’s the loop hole they’re going to exploit to comply with regulations on domestic players.

        1. No, but if I understand it correctly, the only players that can feature in both Milan and Milan futuro are players that fulfill these criteria :

          – not included in Milan squad list (except for players under 22).
          – not older than 22.
          – no more than 50 serie A experience.

So the players over 22 we signed there can’t be switched to Milan. And there can only be 4 players over 22 in Milan futuro.

      2. Anyone from Barteshagi, Simic and Zeroli, Scotti, Liberali and Sia could be included to fill the quotas. Also with the new UCL format, there’s less jepoardy as each team is guaranteed 8 games. It’s not as if we can win it with the current squad.

        1. They didn’t need to be included in the list. They are our academy players, with us for more than 3 years before, and they are not 22 years old yet – They get included in List B, they can getting called anytime.

But different story for players 22 yo or older.

    3. I’m with you here AR and its not ideal but if we resign Alessandro Sala who is the older brother of Emanuele Sala from the primavera and uses him for the u23 team as reported then we might also use him at the first team there to fill the homegrown quota assuming that we are allowed to do that. It would be far from ideal considering he wouldn’t get any minutes in the cl but maybe it could happen nevertheless.

So he can’t help in uefa squad list…

        1. Oh ok it would otherwise have made sense though to sorta circuimvent the rulesets if they doesn’t want too many Italians in the team. Then we really should bring back Brescianini back as he could at least be a useful backup.
          Thanks for clarifying it though.

      1. That was the first few steps in which Saka is insanely fast and outruns anyone, and bigger players are naturally a little bit slower at the start.

At Salzburg Pavlovic recorded a top speed of 34.1 kmh, the same as Seiwald and Okafor. Those three were the fastest in the team.

There were lots of times in the Euro groupstage were Pavlovic came back to tackle with great speed. Hes perfect in a team that stands high up the pitch and where top speed is more needed then being fast the first 5-10 meters. Hes alot like Jonathan Tah in that sense

  2. Interesting. I’ve actually been following this kid. His numbers are certainly impressive.
My issue is that we need a more experienced defender. And generally, more experienced players now that we have lost Giroud and Kjaer.
This guy is good, but he’ll need time to adapt.
And in an environment like Milan’s, such players sometimes break under pressure.

  3. Once again i give note Milan’s Management, Milan must have same playing philosopy and playing system from every Milan’s project from junior until senior Team (Milan DNA). So Milan not dependent on transfer market if need player to replace senior team, so can promote Junior team, and have easy adaptation with senior team causes have same playing system n playing philosopy. And its meaning profit. Must learn from Ajax team
