GdS: Milan could sell midfielder for €50m to fund two operations – the situation

By Oliver Fisher -

Ismael Bennacer continues to attract interest from Saudi Arabia and his sale could finance two new additions, according to a report.

This morning’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (seen below) talks about how Bennacer is no longer sure of a spot in the starting line-up. The use of Yacine Adli as a starter in Vienna in the first friendly was perhaps an indication in this sense.

Fonseca wants a physical and dynamic midfielder like Fofana because he would provide coverage and ensure that his team-mates will be freer to move around him, looking for spaces to make runs and to create.

It feels like Tijjani Reijnders is certain to stay and Ruben Loftus-Cheek’s best position is as a mezzala, so the signing of Fofana and Lazar Samardzic could be covered by the possible sale of Bennacer. Saudi clubs are keen on the former Empoli man, and his €50m clause is not a problem to them.

With that amount the Rossoneri management would have enough to bring in Fofana and Samardzic with potentially some change left over too. In doing so, they would add a shield for the defence and someone who can play as a mezzala or as a playmaker, diversifying the solutions available.

  1. Gds really is pushing hard for benny exit. Idk why. No-one will pay that clause. And I hope he stays, he’s a great midfielder. Definitely a better AM, DM and CM than ruben.

    1. Couldnt agree more. But i feel a midfielder or a few will be sacrificed such as Adli and or Pobega. Pob is Italian and a graduate whilst Yan is a true rossonero. With Fofana and Sama we will have to offload someone and who can generate some cash. And if we really go for another striker, we should sell Jovic. But I feel we can keep Sale as Leaos understudy and Oka4 and Jovic to support Alvaro and help promote Camarda. Oka is a perfect false 9 but not as effective as a LW as Sale is. Bartesaghi should be Theos understudy. We have the tools, we dont know how to use them

    2. I agree. Milan should sell useless Loftus-Cheek instead not Bennacer. I would offload Adli and Pobega too and bring a true defensive midfielder. Fofana, Reijnders, Bennacer, Musah, Samardzic + 1 new DM

    3. It’s madness when they haven’t secured a DM, and why do we need money to fund another striker when we literally just signed a European Championship winning striker?

      1. Lack of proper pivot players after Kessie left, didn’t stop them from selling Tonali last summer. So another knee-jerk decision like this wouldn’t really surprise me.

      2. they likely believe in a pivot of Musah and RLC although i have concerns about RLC in that role for 90 min…Reijnders they probably want further up the field, but could rotate into that position as well + whoever is added.

  2. They want to sell isma bcz this where all 24-25 mercato budget is for milan. Cardinale has no money to invest on the market. They were expecting isma, cdk and Saelemekeers money for the entire summer budget. That’s why you did not see any transfer coming yet. Isma should be played over Rlc. Rlc should be played only against the smaller teams.

  3. Dont sell bennacer, he is the only DM we have right now, even if we will buy Fofana (I dont think he is a true DM), we will need a back up..

    1. offloading Adli doesn’t help fund anything or free up salary…Unfortunately bennacer has availability issues. He is good when he plays but he has averaged less than 2000 min a year since joining the club. I doubt a team will pay 50M for him, but if they can get 30 + use his salary towards extensions…

  4. We can’t rely on Okafor, & Jovic to support Morata. this three will crumble when injury rocks in.

benny man needs to go. i will pick RLC over Benny sunday anytime. Pioli got that one right. a match pioli removed rlc and the whole attack felt like a college team making leao request for a sub.

    calabria should go
    pobega
    adli

they are all average players that need to leave . more will come with stronger milan dna 🧬. but not this average one we have

  5. First we sold Kessie and did not fill his position in with another DM… and we got pounded next season.
Then, we sold Tonali and yet AGAIN, we did not fill in his position with a natural DM! In the meantime, Krunic was also tired of playing football and decided to go to Turkey for holiday. 3 DMs ARE GONE! ZERO SIGNED IN!
Of course we got raped by Inter next season lol.

So now, we sold 2 DM and did not sign any natural DM and we are trying to get rid of our last DM lol. Neither Fofana nor Samardzic is natural DM but rather CM.

Like how hard it is to understand this basic thing??

Adli, Cheek, Tijjani aren’t natural DM

They had 50 million for Zirkzee+ one backup CF. They abandoned Zirkzee operation and just signed Morata.
So, where is that 50 million now?
How come we have to sell Benny in order to sign Fofana and Sama?

    1. “So, where is that 50 million now? How come we have to sell Benny in order to sign Fofana and Sama?”

This shouldn’t be a mystery. It seems we only had ~80m to spend in the first place: the “regular” 50m plus ~30m from selling CDK and Salad, the two most valuable castaways. The CDK money is now not arriving until 2025, and Salad is still here. So we only have 50M. Subtract 13M for Morata and now it’s 37M. Meanwhile they’re trying to sign Pavlovic (25M), Fofana (18M), Samardzic (>20M) and apparently Fullkrug (15M). The numbers don’t add up very quickly, even without the unnecessary (but interesting) signing of Fullkrug. Hence a departure is needed.

    2. “First, we sold Kessie”.

When you SELL something, you usually get something in return.
Kessie was gifted, not sold. Just like many others.

      1. this is an important point, people mad that their salaries can’t be higher, that the spending isn’t unlimited, has very little to do with the billions under AUM that ownership have and has everything to do with being allowed to play in champions league. You can’t buy players without selling players and that is what happened for a long time and now they face a salary crisis…while 300M was lost on transfers, Inter made money net in the transfer market.

  6. No one is going to pay €50 million for Bennacer, the release clause is totally and utterly irrelevant. Milan would gladly accept half.

  7. I think Bennacer needs one more season to show whether he put his injury woes behind him. He wasn’t consistent enough last season but also he was still fresh coming off that injury against inter.

If he has another inconsistent season, then his exit is more likely. He is afterall our only DM and regista right now.

    1. now is your chance though. you might be able to convince a team to spend 30+ on him. If he can’t do it again next year, his value is gone…its a big risk

    2. Normally I’d agree with you. And I was 💯 on the “when Benny is back things will be awesome” train this time last year.

      Two things bug me
      1. He was very overweight when he returned. He remained so to the end of the season. Speaks to a lack of dedication to rehab and we saw that with another injury.
      2. He has a historical availability issue

When I put these things together I get the sense he’s a massive talent who doesn’t do the work to maximize it. Rather he just rides that skill.

So if we get a solid offer for him I’d like to see us take it.

  8. I think Milan don’t have good financial cash flow, i rather if Milan want effective n efficient transfer must hunting free agent player (for senior player) n used them to build n duplicator for youngster.
