GdS: Numbers show how badly Milan have been wronged by officiating errors

By Oliver Fisher -

A study from La Gazzetta dello Sport has suggested that AC Milan have been more wronged by officials this season than they have benefitted from decisions.

The paper (via Radio Rossonera) published a report which breaks things down into two very simple categories: refereeing errors in favour of teams (i.e. they benefit from a wrong decision) and errors against them. Free-kicks, penalties, yellow cards, red cards and incidents given unfairly or ignored have been included.

The account of this season shows that Juventus received favourable errors on 15 occasions and against them in 12 situations. Inter had 6 for them 9 against them, Milan 14 for and 19 against, Napoli were 6 and 6, Roma 13 and 10, Lazio 20 and 10, Torino 5 and 25 then Fiorentina 11 and 11.

Gazzetta also add an ‘Arbitrometro’ (referee-meter) which has all the data from the start of the 2020-21 season to the present day, and it shows the number of errors against each team.

  1. Turin (230)
  2. Milan (121)
  3. Rome (114)
  4. Juventus (103)
  5. Inter (102)
  6. Lazio (80)
  7. Naples (77)
  8. Fiorentina (59)

The ranking shows that from the 2020-21 season up to the 12th game of this campaign, Juventus, for example, had 130 errors for and 103 against. Milan had 95 for and 121 against, Roma 105 and 114, Torino 52 in favour and 230 against, Lazio 79 in favour and 80 against.

  1. It just proves that our feeling that we’re being robbed every month isn’t just a feeling but – in fact – a fact. 🙂

But I’d hate to be a Torino fan though…

  2. Without all these refereeing “errors” every year Juventus would be a midtable team. And Inter have received the most penalties….
