GdS: Mirante ready for first start at 40 years and will set record in Milan-Juve

Antonio Mirante will be the goalkeeper for AC Milan against Juventus tomorrow, making his first-ever start for the Rossoneri. As a report highlights, he will also become the oldest goalkeeper to ever play the fixture.

As per today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport (see photo below), at the age of 40 years and 106 days, Mirante will become the oldest goalkeeper to play the Milan-Juve fixture in the three-points-per-win era.

In such big games, you need the personality of Maignan, the readiness of Sportiello and the recklessness of… Giroud. Mirante, from the Rossoneri bench, has seen everything. And now fate has decided that it’s his turn.

It’s extra special given that Mirante started his career with the Bianconeri, signing his contract with the first team 20 years ago. Since then, however, he has played for a total of six teams and that figure increased to seven if you count Milan.

In his career, he has achieved quite a lot: He protected the goal for Parma and Bologna, flew to Brazil for the 2014 World Cup as a reserve and defended Roma’s goal in the Champions League. He nearly quit at 33 due to a heart problem, but he’s not the type to back down.

Tomorrow evening, he will finally get his chance for Milan and the fans are eager (albeit anxious) to see him.
