GdS: Napoli and Fiorentina contemplate Supercoppa boycott – Milan poised

By Euan Burns -

There is a chance that Napoli and Fiorentina will boycott the new Supercoppa Italiana format which could open the door for AC Milan to take the place of Napoli.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreMilan.it), there is anger from the clubs involved in the tournament about the travel and dates.

For the first time, the Supercoppa is going to be a four-team mini-tournament and it will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 21-25.

Given the business of the European football calendar, both Napoli and Fiorentina have expressed serious anger at the dates and may choose to stay in Italy, meaning they would have to be replaced.

Milan would be the replacement team for Napoli, whilst Atalanta would take the place of Fiorentina. Money could talk, though, as the prize pot for teams taking part ranges from €3-7 million.

Involvement for Milan would present the chance to win a trophy but Stefano Pioli may not want more matches to prepare for.

  1. Not a single Italian club should go to Saudi Arabia to play. They should just not go and show them what do they think about this crap.

  2. I thought Supercoppa is about the scudetto winner vs coppa winner.

So what’s the point making it as a four team mini tourney??? It’s not like that would make this trophy looks more prestigious lol.

  3. Just go and grab the cash from saudi . Win or not win are no big deal . Consider a chance to play bench player like jovic ,sportielo, luka romero, pelegrino, bertesaghi, pobega, adili etc

  4. Wow super cup pays like CL games? Take the money, play the subs, maybe earn some new sponsors, keep ticket prices down lol. Win, win, win!

  5. This has to stop at some point. Ya play the subs and grab the cash sounds good but travel is travel. Maybe if you don’t bring ANY of the starters and immediate backups than okay. I see how the teams sitting out are trying to make a point and I agree with them. Meaningless and lots of work. If clubs were still allowed to have owners use their own money this would be a no brainer but since clubs can only spend what they earn (essentially), then I understand why clubs would do it.

  6. The Saudi are getting ridiculous nowdays, they even trying to buy a spot in the UCL as well, maybe should offer money to their god also for 72 fairies.

  7. Participate, then play the youngsters to fill their senior playing time.
We get the money, the youngsters get the precious senior playing time. All happy.
