GdS: Napoli and Fiorentina contemplate Supercoppa boycott – Milan poised

There is a chance that Napoli and Fiorentina will boycott the new Supercoppa Italiana format which could open the door for AC Milan to take the place of Napoli.

As reported by La Gazzetta dello Sport (via SempreMilan.it), there is anger from the clubs involved in the tournament about the travel and dates.

For the first time, the Supercoppa is going to be a four-team mini-tournament and it will be held in Saudi Arabia from January 21-25.

Given the business of the European football calendar, both Napoli and Fiorentina have expressed serious anger at the dates and may choose to stay in Italy, meaning they would have to be replaced.

Milan would be the replacement team for Napoli, whilst Atalanta would take the place of Fiorentina. Money could talk, though, as the prize pot for teams taking part ranges from €3-7 million.

Involvement for Milan would present the chance to win a trophy but Stefano Pioli may not want more matches to prepare for.
