GdS: ‘New king’ – Milan hope to build around ‘leader’ Maignan with renewal talks on

By Ben Dixon -

In recent weeks, reports have suggested that the situation with Mike Maignan’s AC Milan renewal had stalled. However, a report from this morning suggests that the club is working to change that.

As is a commodity before the start of the mercato, interest has been growing in several of Milan’s players, but few names have gained more than others. The two that instantly spring to mind are Theo Hernandez and Mike Maignan.

Both have similar contract situations – deals expiring in 2026 – and want significant increases in their current deals. However, there has been some distance between the club and the players regarding that increase.

Maignan’s contract has seemingly caused the most headaches, given he wants a salary on the level of Rafael Leao’s, and there has been some distance between both parties in their preferred salary given the interest in him, suggestions have been made about how the Rossoneri may act with this situation.

However, this morning’s Gazzetta dello Sport (read below) reports that Milan see him as non-transferrable unless an offer of €70 million or more arrives, and in the past few days, talks between the club and Maignan’s entourage have ‘intensified’.

The reasoning for this is simple. With Olivier Giroud and Simon Kjaer departing, the Diavolo needs leaders in the team, and the Frenchman is a point of reference for the team already, and this can strengthen in years to come, allowing him to be the ‘new king’ of Milan.

  1. 70 m? For an injury prone player? If a striker is injury prone, we easily understand it. Because the opposition team targeted him. Being Tackled is a meal for him. But for goal keeper who spend all time in front of the net.

  2. I wanna help. You want 70m for him? No one is gonna want to pay that, so he either stays or you quickly put his price at 45m.
