GdS: ‘Now Okafor, then David’ – Milan pushing hard for €40m January deal

By Oliver Fisher -

While Stefano Pioli has a decision to make regarding the striker that will start against Fiorentina, the management are working to ensure that the right centre-forward for the future arrives, perhaps as early as January.

La Gazzetta dello Sport (as seen below) writes how Olivier Giroud cannot do everything alone and an injury would set off all the alarms at Milanello so the directors are studying different avenues and in the next two months will try to work on permanent or loan deals.

The identikit is as follows: a No.9 with physical presence, possibly different in characteristics from Giroud, and he must score goals. Jonathan David fills all the boxes on paper: he has quality, he has experience, he has different characteristics from Giroud and he scores, or at least he has done.

David has only two goals in the league and two in the Conference League this season, which is why Lille’s asking price could drop to €40m and perhaps – Milan hope – even lower. The fact he has a contract expiring in 2025 helps because the Ligue 1 side would be forced to consider an offer.

David is not untransferable, even in January, but Milan are looking into alternatives too. Serhou Guirassy is a more complex track but is another player that Milan really likes.

He has never scored more than 11 goals in a season but this season he has 15 in the Bundesliga. The €17m clause attracts Milan and all the big teams in Europe, but Guirassy is expected to leave Stuttgart in June, not in January.

The third name on the list is Akor Adams of Montpellier who has seven Ligue 1 goals this season. He has a great physique, he knows where the goal is and he can improve a lot, while Matija Popovic of Partizan Belgrade could arrive as more of a signing for the future.
