GdS: From Pavlovic to Samardzic – Milan make mercato evaluations on all fronts

By Isak Möller -

The final days of July have arrived and AC Milan have still made just one signing, securing Alvaro Morata, with a lot more needed before the start of the season. Today’s edition of Gazzetta dello Sport has taken stock of the situation as a whole.

As highlighted by the pink newspaper (see photo below), Giorgio Furlani has made it clear time after time that Milan won’t rush their business on the mercato. The targets, or at least the profiles they are after, are clear and they will work accordingly.

Heart of the defence

Strahinja Pavlovic appears to be just one step away from Milan and, at the same time, Milan have informed Newcastle of Malick Thiaw’s €40m. These two deals don’t hinge on each other, it should be noted, but it would be easier for the Rossoneri to let the German go with the Serbian arriving.

Newcastle had an offer of €30m in mind but it’s very likely that they will increase their offer, perhaps getting a small discount. In the talks with RB Salzburg, the distance between offer and demand has been significantly reduced, with an agreement in sight at the beginning of next week.

The transfer fee should end up being between €20-22m with bonuses included. The strong will of the player was decisive in unlocking the negotiations as he rejected a serious approach from Atletico Madrid recently.

Midfield evaluations ongoing

Atletico Madrid didn’t stop there, though, as they also have joined Milan in the race for Youssouf Fofana. An agreement has already been reached with the player, by the Rossoneri, but the problem remains the high asking price of Monaco.

Fofana is getting anxious and wants to know his destiny in the coming days, with the promise to Milan perhaps wearing off. As such, the Rossoneri have widened their scope by looking at some other targets as well, including Real Betis’ Johnny Cardoso who is valued at €20m.

If one of Yacine Adli and Ismael Bennacer were to leave as well, then Milan would add an attacking midfielder. Lazar Samardzic of Udinese is the key target as talks are ongoing with his entourage and the Fruili side.

Full-back situation heats up

Emerson Royal is getting closer to Milan after the links came back to life in recent days, with an opening from Tottenham seemingly emerging. If Thiaw were to leave (just like Jan-Carlo Simic), Pierre Kalulu would be more of a centre-back option than a full-back.

A reinforcement could thus be needed for the right-back spot and Milan appreciate the Brazilian a lot, even if there is no agreement with Spurs yet. Having said that, the player is very keen on the move and the transfer window is long.

  1. Maignan swap for J.Alvarez
Pay Mamardashvili release clause with Thiaw money (40M)
Get Ricci with Pobega + 15M and Bonaventura for free
    Keep Colombo and sell/terminate Jovic
Buy Kiwior and Pavlovic for 40-45M
Sell Adli, Florenzi, Saelemakers for 35-40M

All of this for 5-10M loss, which technically evens out since we are currently at +10M, but as a result we have:

In: Mamardashvili, Kiwior, Pavlovic, Ricci, Bonaventura, J.Alvarez

Out: Maignan, Thiaw, Pobega, Adli, Jovic, Adli, Florenzi, Saelemakers

And then finally either bring Fofana for 20M fast or go for one proper Kessie replacement. Even if it costs us a lot, with that I can easily see this team winning Scudetto

    1. Why should a Champions League winner and World Cup champion come to us? His salary is not insignificant, and we are already paying Morata a comparatively high amount.

      1. for 6M salary, for him to test himself and prove to everyone his quality in young and dynamic team. he won with best teams, but if he comes here and achieves Scudetto and later stages in UCL, that’s another conversation. I have faith that not every football player is a sell-out and an exciting project could be enough

    2. Bunch of nonsense.
Bonaventura is already a member of a Saudi team.
Keep Colombo but sell/terminate Jovic? So you basically want Milan to downgrade. Colombo is 🗑.
Maignan cost half what Julian Alvarez will cost you.
Adli, Florenzi and Saelemakers for 35-40 mil? You’d probably get half that for all 3. You’d have to pay someone to take Florenzi.
      Your math ain’t mathing.

      1. EPL are interested in Saelemakers after a good season, he is versatile and coaches always need a player like that, so easy 20M. Adli can then go for 10-15M. Colombo as 3rd striker doesn’t matter, we need Italians.

Sportiello, Nava?, Gabbia, Terracciano, Calabria… you only have these 5 and Florenzi I think will be left go. We need 3 more and Colombo, Ricci, Bonaventura change that. Colombo had the same number of goals as Jovic even more. Bonaventura had amazing stats, but didn’t know about Saudi though

        1. Colombo last season in 1336 minutes 4 goals 1 assist and lost his starring spot in a mid table Monza.
Jovic last season in 1242 minutes 9 goals 1 assists.
Yeah, it certainly looks that Colombo had better numbers thamatching.
I’d rather keep Nasti than Colombo.
As I said your matt ain’t mathing.
