GdS: Pioli decides on squad for UCL groups – Caldara present, two new signings not

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli has selected his squad for the Champions League group stages, and the surprise is that Mattia Caldara is present.

La Gazzetta dello Sport report that Caldara – after his loan spells with Venezia and Spezia the last two seasons – will be available to Pioli for the matches against Newcastle, PSG and Borussia Dortmund.

His contract expires in June, at the moment he is the sixth centre-back in the hierarchies generally, but he is useful for the European lists as he grew up in the youth system of an Italian club like Alessandro Florenzi, Marco Sportiello and Antonio Mirante.

UEFA require a certain quote of academy-trained players both from the club itself and from the country the club is based, which you can read all about here.

The list will have 23 players and must be delivered by midnight, with the possibility of making changes until 12 noon tomorrow. There are three excluded players: Ismael Bennacer (still dealing with his knee problem) and the two new arrivals, Marco Pellegrino and Luka Romero.

➤ Goalkeepers: Maignan, Mirante, Sportiello.

➤ Defenders: Calabria, Caldara, Florenzi, Kalulu, Kjaer, Theo Hernandez, Thiaw, Tomori.

➤ Midfielders: Adli, Krunic, Loftus-Cheek, Musah, Pobega, Reijnders.

➤ Forwards: Chukwueze, Giroud, Jovic, Leao, Okafor, Pulisic.

  1. As i recall, we can register 25 players. But we lack 2 more Club-Grown players. We only have 2 Club grown players : Calabria & Pobega.

Our Nation Grown also only 6 (need 2 more to go) : Calabria, Pobega, Florenzi, Caldara, Mirante, Sportiello.

If we still have Colombo & Gabbia, we will register 25 players.

  2. So we’ve signed players to COMPETE ON MULTPLE FRONTS with UNPRECEDENTED LEVELS OF DEPTH but two of those players aren’t even eligible to COMPETE ON MULTPLE FRONTS and add to the UNPRECEDENTED LEVELS OF DEPTH….

    Well done everyone.

    1. Of course that means you’d rather us not getting Chukuewueze or any of the other 8-9 signings just so that Romero could be included in the squad list for CL?

The market developed quite beneficially for Milan. But of course some people would find any little thing to b*tch about lol

      1. What was the point of signing Pellegrino and Romero?

Surely we could’ve just promoted a primavera player or kept one of our existing players?

Forgive me for being sceptical when for 15 years we have gone through hundreds of players, seemingly changing our minds every few months.

This summer alone we sold players who arrived less than 12 months ago.

        1. We turned over our front office this summer. The guys who brought in those players less than 12 months ago are no longer here. That’s a pretty normal occurrence.
