Fikayo Tomori’s red card during the win over Roma means that Stefano Pioli will make a change to the centre-back department for the derby against Inter, a report claims.
Today’s edition of La Gazzetta dello Sport (via PianetaMilan) takes a look at the game that comes after the international break against Inter, remarking that Pioli must make an alteration in defence after Tomori was sent off on Friday night.
The derby is on the horizon and the Rossoneri will go into it with three consecutive wins to begin the season, but Pioli will be without a key player and thus must adapt his plans accordingly.
For the first three games it was Tomori who partnered Malick Thiaw, but now Pierre Kalulu will return. The centre-back pairing will be one that hasn’t been seen so far and it is also a young one, with the German being 22 and the Frenchman 23.
Simon Kjaer is the most experienced of the central defenders, but he is currently behind in the hierarchies. It will be a difficult test for Thiaw-Kalulu as they will have to stop a Lautaro Martinez who is in very good form.
In the Scudetto season Kalulu was one of the undroppable players, while last season he was up and down. The last few months have instead seen the rise of Thiaw, now promoted to starter. In the derby they will be alongside each other.

Well Tomori has not been so good since we faced Chelsea last year. So the loss of hom specifically not that big. But consideribg Kalulu will just get in in a backlinje that already seam unstable does not seen good. Him and Calabria will be the biggest concern afainst Inter
Seriously, I think his outta form started since that match
Kalulu was one of the key 19’ers as Milan kept 12 clean sheets in the second half of the season.
His and Tomori’s pace allowed Milan to keep a really high line and use a really intense press.
What happened?
Tomori has been far more accident prone than Kalulu but the latter lost his place. He needs to be given another chance and a run of games like he had in the title run in.
He’s clearly capable as evidenced by the fact that he was a key player in a Scudetto winning side. Players lose form – but both he and Tomori (and the others from that side)?
Maybe it was about the midfield and Kessie. We now have Loftus-Cheek and Reijnders so will that work?
I say sell both of them and upgrade.. In the summer ofc. Tomori reached his ceiling and is regressing. Kalulu just isnt a cb in modern football. 2 short and not strong enough. What we want is a Thiaw like player but a lefty. Not sure he can excel as rb either
You can’t just say the word “upgrade” without a trigger warning.
Pioli will choose whoever can do it best at that time. And not based on hierarchy.
Imagine he plays pellegrino VS Inter and he drops a Maldini like masterclass lol
I’m praying for that
This situation is only on Pioli to blame. Tomori was asking for a red card so far in that match and he got it. Kalulu should have started second half
I just can’t believe why Danish Wall(Simon Kjear) isn’t getting minutes any longer. His experience and the defence mechanism of Thiaw can yield results.
