Olivier Giroud got his preseason campaign up and running with a brace against FC Köln at the weekend, and Stefano Pioli can feel more at ease about the striker situation.
La Gazzetta dello Sport recall how Giroud scored two goals in the first half against the Bundesliga side, just like at the Mapei Stadium on 22 May to help Milan win the Scudetto. He pointed to the Scudetto patch on his chest after the first goal and now the goal is a second star.
Milan are short on strikers at the moment as Zlatan Ibrahimovic will renew but until 2023 there is no chance of seeing him back on the pitch, while Divock Origi may not be available for the Serie A opener on August 13 because of a muscle problem.
Giroud’s contract binds him to Milan until 2023 and the parties have not yet begun talks over a renewal. It is clear that Milan have other priorities on the market with other positions in the squad to cover, but sooner or later a decision will be made on whether to extend his deal.
In the meantime, Origi and Ibrahimovic can take the time that they need to get back to 100%, while Pioli knows he has a reliable goal scorer.
