GdS: Pioli’s mission to get the best out of Bennacer – the possible position change

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan head coach Stefano Pioli could move Ismael Bennacer to a different position in order to try and get the best out of him, a report claims.

Bennacer joined the Rossoneri from Empoli in the summer for a fee of €16million plus €2m in potential bonuses.

Big things were expected of the Algeria international as he arrived fresh off the back of having been named the African Cup of Nations Player of the Tournament.

Many thought he would be an instant starter as a regista in Marco Giampaolo’s 4-3-1-2 system, however the former Sampdoria boss was sacked after just 111 days.

Stefano Pioli’s arrival also spelled out bad news for the 21-year-old – who has amassed just 272 minutes of action thus far at Milan – as the new head coach was tipped to prefer Lucas Biglia as the deep-lying midfielder.

That has been the case so far, but according to La Gazzetta dello Sport – as cited by MilanNews.it – Pioli has the objective of getting the best out of Bennacer.

As a result, he ‘could return to his original role as a midfielder’ rather than playing as a regista, the report claims, but that of course depends on the performances of Biglia who Pioli knows from his time at Lazio.
