GdS: Two new midfield additions could force existing duo out – the situation

By Oliver Fisher -

AC Milan are making moves to change the face of their midfield heading into the new season and this could spell bad news for a couple of existing players, a report claims.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Milan management have held positive talks with Monaco over Youssouf Fofana and have agreed a fixed sum of €14m. Negotiations are ongoing over bonuses, but the deal could be closed inside the next 48-72 hours.

In the meantime, talks are also on with Lazar Samardzic’s father-agent. Udinese are asking for €20m plus bonuses to sell the 22-year-old but Milan are aiming to close for a bit less, giving Paulo Fonseca a versatile creative midfield presence.

The report goes on to say that if Fofana and/or Samardzic come in then it could mean Yacine Adli and Pobega no longer have space in the squad. Milan cannot guarantee regular minutes to either as things stand currently let alone if new players arrive, so it would be logical to listen to offers.

La Gazzetta also state that Pobega could end up being used as a counterpart in another operation, though they do not state if it would be for Samardzic or another target that the club have in mind.

    1. Pobega should leave, unfortunate with his injury but we need someone great in that position. Adli I am unsure, I’d be inclined to renew him for a year or 2 and loan him out to a good team if that was an option.

I think showed he has heart, affection for the shirt, can play in many roles but it’s unfortunate his speed will never allow him to fulfill his offensive potential as a playmaker. While deep lying playmakers were always rare, with the Pirlo and Xavi coming to mind, maybe Calhanoglu now, the speed of the game now makes it even more difficult and it takes someone truly special to play that role. He isn’t close to that level yet, but he is talented and courageous enough that he might one day.

    2. Pobega won’t be missed much but many would like to see Adli getting a real chance with a proper coach and playing in a role he has more experience. I’m sure Adli would stay even if Fonseca said “listen lad, I can’t promise you’ll play a single minute this season”.

    3. Pobega – no. He’s terrible and is slow as molasses.

Adli – yes. You don’t get rid of a player with that kind talent – who was playing a NEW position – for what – the same measly 3M that we received for Simic?? What a joke

  1. Aren’t somw of these players rumoured to leave there for Squad lists?

    Club trained:
    Calabria, Pobega, Colombo, Maldini, Gabbia,

    Association trained: Sportiello, Florenzi, Terraciano

If Florenzi goes as well as Combo and Pobega (even Maldini), how do we make up the deficit? 🤷‍♂️

    1. I think Fonseca likes Colombo and we might keep him but instead of Jovic, I think there were rumors of the latter going to Turkey…

But yeah we are f-ed in terms of Italians…

Only good striker atm is Retegui (huge gamble), and Scamacca, but Atalanta will want 60M…

no CBs will be Italian if they come Pavlovic and Kiwior were only targets and both would only arrive if we sell Thiaw.

Bonaventura is an option for free but he’s CAM/LW and we are covered there, making Maldini place there also a bit problematic and I think he already is joining Monza.

That leaves only midfield and since we are getting Fofana there is only 1, max 2 places there.

we have only 4 now and max will be 6, Bove an Ricci are only quality Italian players… maybe they plan on registering Zeroli, Bartesaghi, Camarda?!

      1. They don’t have to be Italian just club or homegrown. But I get what you’re saying.
Also under 22 yrs don’t count for the lists so Zeroli etc wouldn’t be helpful in this regard

  2. Both of this players are best as AM, not in the back pivot positions. Pobega is basicaly younger Loftus Cheeck with a bit less speed but with more effort/grit and lower salary. I dont rate either of them too high. As for Adli i belive he has the highest potential of all this players and can actually shine as a AM if given the chance. Hope Maldini is given the chance in pre season too so we can better rate him as well.

  3. I feel like they haven’t had any offers close to what the expectation is…they have been available for several weeks…it almost felt like they hid the adli offers to try to pretect his perceived valued in a top flight league.
